Care as THE topic of CSW68 There were at least 22 events discussing the issue of paid caregiving, from the aspect of bringing caregivers and their families (overwhelmingly women) out of poverty and from human rights perspectives. The most shocking bit of information came to me about community health workers. In the US they are respected (unless they are telling some folks to wear a mask and get a vaccination, then they are reviled) and well-educated professionals. In Asia they are classified as "volunteers" and do not need to be paid for hours of labor. It is considered a big success if they are taken into government service in some countries, even if the government does not provide decent wages or benefits. At one of the events I attended this week, it was said that a dollar invested in paying properly for caregiving returns four dollars in the economy. I am not sure how that works, but the "return on investment" explanation is used all the time. In central Indiana we pay extra sales taxes to pay for a big sports arena and are told we should consider it worth our while, even if we never set foot in a stadium, because the community benefits so greatly. However, it should go without saying that to not pay caregivers is to say it is not worth anything, they are not worth anything and the economy can do without them. That is patently not true. The economy would collapse without caregivers and the need for them became strikingly evident during the pandemic as so many dropped away. Remember, caregiving is not just low-skilled care for children, the elderly, the disabled, it is medical personnel, teachers. Indeed, we are making a mistake in letting low-skilled people care for these groups and it is more expensive in the long run. "Skilling up" caregivers and paying them appropriately is an investment in the care economy without which there is no other economy. Caregiving for a loved one is among the most demanding, challenging, and rewarding human activities. Although children are commonly thought of as the recipients of care – rather than the givers – children all over the world participate actively in caregiving every day. The US does yet not have formal policies or support systems in place for these young people as we do for adult caregivers. Furthermore, schools do not typically identify or provide support for Caregiving Youth, which puts them at risk for academic, social, and emotional challenges. In the UK, the rights of “young carers” are recognized and upheld by national governments, caregiving advocacy groups, health care services, and schools. #LeedsCityCouncil set to make care experience a protected characteristic. Members of #LeedsCityCouncil’s executive board are set to agree to establishing #careexperience as a locally protected characteristic by the council. The move follows a deputation to full council from #careleavers, recognising that people’s experience of being in the #caresystem can lead to similar barriers than those faced by other groups with protected characteristics. A young person who is ‘#careexperienced’ means that they have had experience of the #caresystem, either on a temporary or long-term basis, and includes children currently in our care, as well as ‘#careleavers’ – people who have been in care previously. Social care support can be transformative when people receive it.  But a new Healthwatch England poll of 1,504 working-age disabled adults found that 28% have never accessed social care or other support despite potentially being eligible.   Across England, this would translate to around 1.5 million people.    We’re joining Healthwatch England in calling for a fully funded, long-term plan to reform social care. This should include proactive outreach to people who may benefit from social care, better support for unpaid carers and a focus on prevention.   #SocialCare

More than one third of older Australians live in rural and remote locations, yet when they need to access an aged care home, it often means being separated from their communities and loved ones. Regional providers like not-for-profit Whiddon know it takes more than goodwill to keep operating in regional areas, and more support is needed to keep families together. “One key strategy to better care for our regional communities is a multi-pronged approach between state and federal governments, working cooperatively with providers towards a collective goal,” writes Whiddon CEO Chris Mamarelis in Aged Care Today. While RFA was initially created to help give care partners a break, we quickly learned from Jack and Mary that the participants needed a break too. Mary had unintentionally passed her stress to Jack and smothered him with her hovering.
