🚨 Groundbreaking new research paper highlights link between quality early childhood education and care and a reduction in youth crime 🚨 Queensland childhood experts saying the report should be a major consideration for all political parties ahead of tomorrow's state election. The "Impact of a Preschool Communication Program and Comprehensive Family Support on Serious Youth Offending" report examined the impact of Queensland’s Pathways to Prevention Project, finding that the preschool program reduced the number of young people becoming involved in the judicial system by more than 50 per cent. The report also highlights the long-term benefits of early prevention programs as a more cost effective measure to deal with youth offending than remedial approaches, and suggests that community partnerships, allied health supports, and evidence-based strategies should form a key part of any youth justice strategy. PeakCare's state election platform has called for evidence based early intervention initiatives within existing literature to be front and centre of government investment to protect our state's future prosperity. We welcome the findings of this study as additional evidence that reforming our early learning and care system and making sure kids and families get access to the wrap-around supports they need in their early years needs to be a part of the solution. Yesterday the QLD Chapter of the NTRCA contributed as part of a focus group to provide feedback on the Catalyst for Change program, a residential care workforce strategy led and hosted by PeakCare QLD. The valuable discussion will help shape and inform this important work commissioned by the Department of Child Safety, Seniors and Disability Services. The NTRCA welcomes all opportunities to lend their expertise and experiences to advance the critical work of the residential care sector and make a positive difference for the children and young people who need this support. #NTRCA #ChildrensWeek #AdvocacyForChildren #ResidentialCare #ChampioningChildrensRights PeakCare Queensland

Every child and community in Queensland deserves to feel safe and protected. PeakCare takes community safety seriously, and we know in Queensland it is time to commit to ‘Do Detention Differently’. PeakCare welcomes the commitment today of $80 million from the LNP for the Circuit Breaker Sentencing intensive rehabilitation program for youth offenders as a good start when it comes to ‘Doing Detention Differently’. PeakCare’s state election platform emphasises that we must all reimagine the system, including the opportunity to ‘Do Detention Differently’. We know evidence-based models which focus on health, education, and trauma-informed support, will enhance community safety and reducing recidivism. Key takeaways from today’s announcement include: 💲 an $80 million investment in an intensive rehabilitation program 🏫 a commitment to two small-group facilities with a combined capacity of 60 youth 🧭 facilities to be built outside urban areas in northern and southern Queensland 🩺 offering wraparound social and health services to break the cycle of crime. The Circuit Breaker Sentencing program will deliver intensive rehabilitation for young people who have been sentenced through a 3–6-month court ordered program. The program will help rehabilitate youth offenders and redirect them away from further offending. PeakCare acknowledges the positive initial investment this program will bring to ‘doing detention differently’ whilst cautioning that adequate, ongoing investment and structured ongoing support for young people and their families is required to address the root cause of offending. The evidence is clear – targeted investment in prevention, early intervention and diversionary programs is a smart investment for Queensland. PeakCare calls on all political parties to support doing detention differently.
