Researchers from the School of Public Health need your help! More and more older adults with chronic conditions are using cannabis/marijuana, and researchers want to better understand why. If you are age 65 or over and use cannabis/marijuana, then you might be eligible to participate in a new study to understand cannabis use among older adults. Participation in this research study involves completing a baseline survey, two daily surveys over a 10-day period where you will answer questions about your cannabis use and related experiences. Your responses will be confidential. The baseline survey will take 10-20 minutes to complete and the daily surveys will take less than 5 minutes to complete. You will receive up to a $120 for participating. You may also be invited to participate in an one hour interview at the end of the study, and will be compensated an additional $40. All research procedures can be completed online with appointments completed via Zoom so you can complete study procedures in the comfort of your own home. 🔬✨ There has been a new publication in the Drug Science Policy and Law Journal! 🌐💊 This study investigates the intricate relationship between classic psychedelics and health, offering a unique perspective by focusing on population-level interactions in real-world scenarios. Addressing a critical gap in psychedelic literature, the research delves into the impact of psychedelics on mental and physical health across racial and ethnic groups. While there is a growing acknowledgment of the protective factors of psychedelics, findings suggest significant variations in these effects among different demographics. Notably, the study highlights the understudied realm of race differences in psychedelic literature, with a specific focus on the potential health benefits and risks associated with classic psychedelic use. Drawing on a robust analysis of pooled data from the National Survey of Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) spanning from 2005 to 2019, encompassing a vast cohort of 421,477 Black and White adult respondents, the study explores the association between Lifetime Classic Psychedelic Use and multiple indicators of cardio-metabolic health, including cardiovascular disease, hypertension, and Body Mass Index. The conclusion from this research brings forth essential insights. Despite acknowledging limitations, it underscores the significance of studying population-level interactions with classic psychedelics, representing how individuals engage with these substances in their everyday lives. A notable point is the divergence in health outcomes between racial groups, particularly concerning Black Americans, who may not experience the same cardio-metabolic health benefits associated with psychedelic use. These findings shed light on the impact of racism, emphasizing that racial disparities extend beyond clinical settings, influencing the efficacy of psychedelics even in everyday life. The study advocates for an exploration of racial disparities in psychedelic health outcomes, urging a holistic approach to address structural inequalities and racism to bridge existing health gaps. 🌐📚 We invite you to explore the full publication and join the conversation. https://lnkd.in/dS9mwCj7 #PsychedelicResearch #DrugScience

Cannabis Use Linked to Lower Dementia Risk Researchers offer a novel perspective on the relationship between recreational cannabis use and cognitive health. The study, analyzed CDC data from over 4,700 adults aged 45 and older, revealing that recreational cannabis users reported a staggering 96% lower odds of experiencing subjective cognitive decline (SCD) compared to non-users. This significant association points to a potential protective effect of cannabis against cognitive impairments often preceding dementia. Despite its limitations, including the need for longitudinal studies to confirm these findings, this study marks an important step in understanding cannabis's role in cognitive health, particularly distinguishing between the impacts of recreational versus….. https://lnkd.in/g4fB6Aqe

If you my poll last week on #cannabis research and went 🤔 neurodivergence? Let’s talk about it 👇🏻 Neurodivergence an umbrella term “that describes people with variation in their mental functions” (Forbes) It’s commonly referred to in the scope of ADHD and autism but also includes narcolepsy, synesthesia, downs syndrom, schizophrenia and more. Neurodivergence is generally poorly understood in the medical realm, in part because of technological limitations to understand the brain and in part because of ableism. 🧠 (But let’s be clear❗️neurodivergence is not new and has always occurred) So what does this have to do with cannabis and research❓ WELL 🤓 The endocannabinoid system is a master regulatory system that touches every one of our biological functions - and you better believe the ECS and neurodivergence are related. 🤝🏻 This is still an area if immersing research, but it’s quickly growing 🌱 Whether it’s an over regulation of the ECS or an under regulation, our endocannabinoid system plays a major part in neurodivergent symptoms. Neurodivergence is typically not accounted for in major scientific studies, but the overlap with cannabis has seen an explosion of scientific interest. Curious to know more? I’ll link a few resources in the comments 📰 #cannabiscommunity #cannabisindustry #cannabiswriter

America's Psychedelic Reboot: Colorado Blazes a New Trail The US is witnessing a fascinating shift in attitudes towards psychedelics. Colorado takes center stage with a unique "people's choice" approach – decriminalizing psilocybin mushrooms and DMT possession for adults 21+. This progressive move prioritizes public interest in exploring these substances' therapeutic potential. Colorado's Experiment: Freedom with Caution While current state law allows for unregulated possession and personal use, this freedom won't last long. A tightly controlled psilocybin industry is on the horizon for 2025, highlighting the cautious yet progressive approach. This "grey area" isn't unusual; it often precedes stricter regulations in the US. The Broader US Landscape: Promising Developments The winds of change are blowing nationwide. MDMA therapy for PTSD is making significant strides, with potential FDA approval by Summer 2024. However, similar to Colorado's psilocybin plans, this treatment will likely be available only under trained therapists, not for recreational use. 2025 and Beyond: Uncharted Territory Colorado enters uncharted territory. Oregon is the only other state with statewide psilocybin decriminalization, and its long-term effects remain unseen. Unlike cannabis, Colorado won't have legal retail sales. Adults will face a choice: highly regulated (and likely expensive) clinical settings, the potentially cheaper unregulated market, or completely independent use. The Conversation Continues This is no ordinary drug policy shift. The US healthcare landscape is evolving towards responsible psychedelic use and research. While Colorado's approach raises questions, it's a significant step. Let's discuss! Share your thoughts on decriminalization, clinical models, and the future of psychedelics in the US. #psychedelics #decriminalization #mentalhealth #colorado #MDMA #FDA #futureofmedicine

Its initiation and experimentation are mostly given during adolescence. The consequences of cannabis use can be detrimental, leading to physical and mental disorders, strained relationships, family and school problems, or dependence syndrome. The World Health Organization (WHO) reported that research on risk and protective factors for recreational cannabis use has been limited to a few high-income countries, where Spain is omitted. In Spain, and particularly in Andalusia, little is known about the factors influencing cannabis use behaviour in adolescents. Therefore, this thesis explored the prevalence and related factors associated with cannabis use among Andalusian adolescents aged 14-18 years old, based on the I-Change model.
