A link to upload YOUR marine mammal photos for the MCERC and North Atlantic catalogs ! Even what you may think are "bad" photos reveal the time, date, behavior, and how many animals you saw along with the gps of where you were standing at the time. That's a lot of data to use for protecting whales, dolphins, and manatee. Anyone can add photos to a folder MCERC has created in OneDrive. It's easy! 1. Contact us on the Marine-Eco.org MCERC FB page or other social media platform. 2. We will give you a link to upload your video or still images to a folder in the MCERC database. 3. We'll submit your images that are suitable for identification to the oceanwide catalogs. www.Marine-Eco.org -----> Your photos will ALWAYS be credited to the photographer. ----->The images will be added to the MCERC catalog and you will be granting MCERC rights to using your images for science and education. When we publish scientific data or educational content, you will always be given credit for your contributions to science. ----->Your images that are suitable for photoidentification will be submitted to the Ocean wide catalogs under MCERC's catalog. You will be listed as the photographer. We will let you know when there is a match or if the whale you photographed is a new addition to the catalogs. First sneak peek of the images captured on Bunurong Country (Mornington Peninsula) with our Crab Cams. This was before the spider crabs started moulting a few weeks ago. The images collected this year will be uploaded to Spider Crab Watch on Zooniverse for the community to check out and help us review. The project consists of three series of tasks: 🦀 one on spider crabs where participants answer questions focused on spider crab presence and activity (e.g. evidence of moulting, etc) 🐟 one on other marine life where participants help us identify predators and other marine life, which could be benefiting from the crabs being around 🤿 one one human activity focused on identifying humans (e.g. divers, snorkellers) and evidence of human activity (e.g. fishing gear, etc). The project is currently still running with images from 2022 - but we've made great progess and only the last serie of tasks on human activity is still active. This is a quick and easy serie of tasks to do to get a feel for the project and you'll be just as likely seeing spider crab images than images with humans in them. An unusual friendship between a cow and a bloat of hippos is drawing the attention of zoologists worldwide. Rangers in the Masai Mara National Park, Kenya, came across what they thought would be an eminent hippo attack on a stranded cow on Lake Naivasha. Hippos are territorial, and the dominant bull presides over a stretch of water over groups of five to thirty cows and calves. The hippo is among the most dangerous animals due to its highly aggressive and unpredictable nature. However, according to reports, both hippo and cow emerged to graze on grasses bordering the lake. For several days, just before the night began, they were seen leaving the water to feed on land. Wildlife biologists who were called to study this new behavior even mentioned that the cow, named by locals Moonie the Moocher, would enter the water several times during the day. They speculated she was also cooling her body temperature. Although hippos lie close to each other, they do not seem to form social bonds except between mothers and daughters, and they are not social animals. This is the first evidence of a unique bond that defies all studies on hippos’ behavior. I've always wanted to create a mini-video series about the chapters of my thesis, offering an immersive journey into marine mammal research. Today, I'm happy to share with you the first of what I hope will become a series of at least six videos! Here, I'll take you behind the scenes and showcase the cutting-edge methods I used to study mother-calf interactions in humpback whales. These methods are among the foundation of the six chapters comprising my thesis. In the next videos of this series, I'll present key aspects of humpback whale mother-calf pairs' lives, including nursing, swimming behaviors, and acoustic communication—all made possible thanks to these methods. Gray jays always look thoughtful. Maybe they are. They're corvids, after all, a group that includes ravens and crows, long hailed as among the smartest of birds. This gray jay might be wondering why a substantial fraction of the people who come to ogle it in the Adirondacks have recently taken to calling it Canada jay. After all, when it sails by you it appears, unlike a blue jay, mostly gray. And it's a jay. Does it live only in Canada? Nope. Yet the American Ornithological Society has decided that an old name for the bird should be the new name. The change doesn't trouble me much. Heck, I still call the white-rumped raptors you see swinging back and forth low over marshes marsh hawks, even though the professional organization of American ornithologists (which, I'm not kidding, changed its own name a few years back) told us decades ago we should call it a northern harrier. Most important, the birds don't care. I am a devout believer in having standardized scientific names, unchanging though time (in theory if not always in practice) and equally clear or unclear to people who study birds all over the world. But I've never been sold on the idea of standardizing common names. They often carry history with them, agreeable or otherwise. They vary regionally, and in biology, we celebrate regional variations and diversity, don't we? Common names are often descriptive in a way that scientific names frequently are not, or at least not in a way most of us can understand. When I spent several happy years living in Mississippi, I never presumed to correct gray-haired neighbors when they called woodpeckers peckerwoods. Nor would I tell anyone to say Canada goose rather than Canadian geese, nomenclature of the American Ornithologist's Union notwithstanding. Some of the finest, smartest, most admirable people I know say Canadian. That's fine with me, even though, it must be conceded, Canadian geese don't confine themselves to Canada.

I'm not 100% on my identification and want to say it's an Eastern Mud Turtle (Kinosternon subrubrum) since it’s lacking the stripes from the eyes to the snout. But I’ve read it can be tricky to distinguish between species. Taxonomy is a topic that certainly goes beyond my level of education. 😅 Regardless, I'm going to treat this as an Eastern Mud Turtle and share some facts about the species. There are two species of Mud Turtle in North Carolina: the Striped Mud Turtle (Kinosternon baurii) and the Eastern Mud Turtle (Kinosternon subrubrum). Both are omnivorous, feeding on crayfish, aquatic insects, plants and mollusks when given the chance. Take a look at their smooth, rounded shell—it’s noticeably different from a yellow-bellied slider or river cooter. Mud turtles also have a second hinge on the lower part of their shell. This allows them to close up their limbs for defense, a feature not common in all turtle species. COMMERSON'S DOLPHIN Commerson's dolphin, also known as the skunk dolphin, is a small, strikingly patterned marine mammal found in the cool waters of the southern hemisphere. Named after the French naturalist Philibert Commerson, who first described them in 1767, these dolphins are easily recognisable by their unique black-and-white colouration. The species is divided into two geographically separate populations: one around the southern tip of South America, particularly in the Strait of Magellan and the Falkland Islands, and the other near the Kerguelen Islands in the Indian Ocean. Commerson's dolphins prefer shallow coastal waters and are often seen in bays, estuaries, and near river mouths. These dolphins are small, with adults reaching about 1.5 meters (5 feet) in length and weighing up to 86 kilograms (190 pounds). Their distinctive black-and-white pattern includes a black head, dorsal fin, and flippers, with the rest of their body being white. This bold colouration makes them highly visible in the water. Commerson's dolphins are known for their playful behaviour and high level of activity. They are often seen riding waves, leaping out of the water, and performing acrobatic maneuvers. They are also known to interact with boats, often swimming in their wake or bow-riding. Their diet mainly consists of small fish, squid, and crustaceans, which they hunt using echolocation.
