It’s been an insane week for AI - and it’s only Thursday. Apple iOS 18 eye tracking, Ilya leaves OpenAI, Stability AI, GPT-4o, Google I/O, and Meta's AI ‘Camerabuds’. If you are a business owner and wanting to stay up to date, here's everything going on in AI right now: 1️⃣ Apple announced iOS 18 will introduce Eye Tracking. Eye Tracking allows users to have a built-in option for controlling their iPad and iPhone with just their eyes. Massive move for accessibility! 2️⃣ OpenAI co-founder Ilya Sutskever announced that he is leaving the company. This follows months of speculation of Sutskever’s role from the November 2023 Sam Altman ousting. Alongside him, superalignment group co-lead Jan Leike announced his departure. 3️⃣ According to a new report from The Information, Stability AI is facing a cash crunch and is looking for a buyer. Stability AI is... not so stable. 4️⃣ In case you missed it somehow, OpenAI unveiled GPT-4o. It's a new advanced multimodal model that integrates text, vision, and audio processing and is free for ALL users. You can see my previous post for context 5️⃣ Google had I/O Developer’s Conference, announcing a HUGE amount of updates across its AI ecosystem. Enhancements across the Gemini family, Project Astra, a new video generation model to rival OpenAI’s Sora, and so much more. 6️⃣ Meta is reportedly in the early stages of developing AI-powered earphones, known internally as "Camerabuds” The project aims to compete with OpenAI and Apple as tech giants rush to infuse AI into wearable devices. Generative AI to Smartphones !!!! Apple is actively working on incorporating generative AI into iOS 18, slated for release in 2024, in response to the rapid advancement of generative AI technologies, as reported by Bloomberg. Surprised by the sudden popularity of generative AI following OpenAI's ChatGPT launch, Apple aims to enhance Siri with generative AI capabilities and integrate AI features into its first-party apps, including Apple Music, Pages, and Keynote. The tech giant is considering various deployment strategies for generative AI, including on-device processing, cloud-based solutions, or a combination of both. Meanwhile, Google, seeking to catch up in the generative AI race, introduced the Pixel 8 series last month. This new smartphone lineup features generative AI functionalities such as a magic editor, call assistant, audio magic eraser, and photo unblur, indicating Google's strategy to leverage generative AI to gain a competitive edge in the smartphone market. Although there is currently a lot of ‘AI washing’ among product vendors, ‘on-device AI’ does have a lot of appeals and a promising future. But what will come along with this likely trend? AI does require different data to be useful hence we will likely see mobile phone makers broaden sources of data to be fed into on-device AI.
