𝗦𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝗱𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘇𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝗾𝘂𝗯𝗶𝘁 𝘁𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗾𝘂𝗮𝗻𝘁𝘂𝗺 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝘂𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀 🖥️🚀 🤝 18 partners from seven countries presented their final results for the project #MATQu (Materials for Quantum Computing) funded by European Commission in Delft (Netherlands) last May. The project started in 2021 with the aim of supporting the development of reliable #supplychains for the central hardware element of a #quantumcomputer, the so-called qubit. 💡⚙️ This goal required new developments along the entire #valuechain for solid-state qubits. The results now presented include, for example, the development and qualification of substrates for qubit integration on wafer sizes suitable for industrial use, technology chemicals for manufacturing processes, cryogenic probing solutions or test and measurement facilities for the characterization of #qubit components. ❄️🌡️ Fraunhofer IAF contributed its expertise and modern infrastructure in the field of cryogenic #measurement technology to the consortium in order to characterize qubit components and support material and process optimization in qubit production with the knowledge gained. The institute thus made a significant contribution to quality assurance and the scaling of European qubit production. 🧮🔢 Expressed in figures, the international project teams showed 14 demonstrators, 24 scientific publications and 18 ongoing patent applications at the end of the project. The overarching project goal was thus achieved: to create a basis for the development of a European supply chain for solid-state qubits. We're thrilled to announce that QU-PIC’s website is now online 🚀 What is QU-PIC again? 🤔 QU-PIC is an EU-funded project whose main objective is to develop a toolkit of quantum building blocks for photonics integrated circuits (PICs) to accelerate the development of complex quantum systems, from idea to packaged system. Many of the technologies required in the supply chain will be developed to ensure that all involved elements are available in Europe, which is key to establishing European Sovereignty in the emerging quantum field. Quantum technology holds the promise of enabling next-generation computing, communications, and sensing systems. However, the size, cost, and scalability of current devices prevent them from reaching their full potential. Photonics is one of the key enabling technologies for developing the quantum field. In particular, photonics integrated circuits (PICs) with their wafer-level manufacturing based on microfabrication technologies can provide the required reduction in size and cost and enable next-generation scalable quantum technologies.
