In their work together, they will aim to deliver on the promise of hybrid computing technologies, enhancing both AI and quantum capabilities to solve the world’s most important problems. The Week in #quantumComputing - June 25th 2024 - QBlox, C12, Quantum Machines, D-Wave, Microsoft and resource estimation What happened in the last 7 days? Investment rounds week! Quantum Machines has announced the opening of the Israeli Quantum Computing Center (IQCC) at Tel Aviv University. Qblox has secured $26M in a Series A funding round. Wave Photonics M4.6 GBP and C12 €18M. Not bad for almost hitting the equator of the year. Meanwhile, the debate on annealing vs optimized and error-mitigated gate based algorithm continues. D-Wave, that had its annual conference this year, deploys its second QC at Davidson Technologies Inc.'s new global headquarters. Also, their commissioned report by Hyperion Research reveals that businesses investing in quantum computing expect substantial ROI, with an estimated $51.5 billion in benefits. Now, they have asked 300 companies, many of them with already active quantum programs. If you asked any random company in the Fortune 500 the answer would be a bit gloomier. Meanwhile, Microsoft adds more “copilot” features and focuses on chemistry together with Unilevel. Azure’s quantum marketplace has been flying “under the radar” for some time, but it seems they are doubling down on this strategy introducing two new capabilities, Generative Chemistry and Accelerated DFT. Lastly, a few very relevant papers have been published this week, including a Quantum Random Forest implementation by the JPMorgan team.

Jensen Huang's comments on quantum computing caught my attention, and I respectfully disagree. While it's true that widespread adoption of quantum computing may take time, commercialization is already in the rearview.   Thanks to D-Wave, quantum computing is no longer just a theoretical concept; it IS being applied in real-world scenarios.  What are those real-world scenarios? There are several. Drug discovery, financial services, security, materials science, fault detection, mobility, supply chain management. D-Wave offers what is known as annealing quantum computing and while many others are making great strides in research and development, D-Wave’s annealing quantum technology is the only one to be commercialized.   In light of Jensen’s recent comments Alan Baratz, CEO of D-Wave, responded by saying “While he might be right about other quantum companies, he is dead wrong about D-Wave”. He further pointed out that “more than 100 organizations are using D-Wave’s quantum technologies on-premise and on-cloud to fuel operations and realize business value. D-Wave is working with organizations across industries to tackle complex enterprise challenges from workforce scheduling and logistics routing to resource optimization and more with our quantum computing solutions.” He ended on a collaborative note, with a touch of class “There is massive potential for AI and quantum to work together in advancing the limitations of today’s classical computing capabilities. We welcome the opportunity to partner with companies like NVIDIA in exploring what’s possible when QPUs and GPUs come together.” Despite Jensen's opinion, I'm seeing interest in quantum increase, and while his comments may dampen that in the near term, forward-looking VCs and other investors will continue backing it. Afterall, every great idea we see emerging now is the result of visionary investors having funded that idea years ago. Quantum computing is significantly faster than classical computing for certain problems because it can leverage superposition (qubits can exist in multiple states simultaneously) and entanglement (helps process complex, interconnected computations very efficiently). Willow, a quantum computing chip developed by Google performed a standard benchmark computation in under five minutes that would take one of today’s fastest supercomputers 10 septillion (that is, 10^25) years! It uses advanced quantum error correction mechanisms, leveraging redundant qubits to detect and mitigate errors, exponentially improving computation reliability and scalability. This opens up huge possibilities for real-world usecases in AI, scientific computing, healthcare, and energy. Also, concerns around security and privacy as it would break traditional cryptographic methods easily.
