Embracing Individuality As time passes and years in the field of education accumulate, it becomes more and more apparent to that no two students are alike. We set a curriculum of study, we attempt to educate as many students as we can at any given time in the traditional classroom. However, this most assuredly does not guarantee that all students are receiving the instruction they need. Furthermore, students' learning and working styles differ. It is not reasonable that all students be painted with one brush and be expected to succeed. We at Westbrook foster discovering the uniqueness of each of our students and applying what we learn to our respective teaching approach. The reason I've been so passionate about equitable access to Higher Education in the past is because I saw firsthand just how much the quality of education can range between schools. Around 10 years ago (!) I made the decision to accept a scholarship and bursary to attend one of the best independent schools in Wales for sixth form. Coming from one of the worst performing state comprehensives, the difference was night and day. Smaller classes, international trips, access to so many resources and extra-curricular activities... The list goes on. But all of these resulted in a lot of confidence, perhaps even entitlement, which carries a lot of weight in interviews. So when interviews are such a big part of education and employment, you see how things can spiral from there. All of this is to say, we shouldn't have a three tier education system. That is private schools, grammar and state-selective schools, and then non-selective state comprehensives. We need to disincentivise the structural differences where we can. And no, I'm not pulling the ladder up. I just don't think those ladders should only be for a handful of lucky people who are then used as shining minorities. Less ladders, more steps and ramps that everyone can use with the right support.

In a recent article by Susie O’Brien in the Melbourne Herald Sun, concerns were raised regarding the composition of the 2024 VCE English reading list, with over half of the texts promoting radical identity politics instead of classic Western literature. The Institute of Public Affairs (IPA) found that out of 36 texts, 19 were grounded in radical identity politics, sparking criticism from research fellows like Lana Starkey and Morgan Begg, who argued that students are being deprived of the rich history of Western civilization. This prompts significant questions for parents, not only in Victoria but also globally, about the extent to which they are willing to let distant bureaucrats dictate their child's learning experiences, and the level of input both parents and teachers have in shaping those experiences. “…when faculty have high expectations and expect students to read and write reasonable amounts, students learn more…requiring that students attend to their class work has the potential to shape their actions in ways that are conducive to their intellectual development…Given the little time they spend studying, it is no surprise that they are not learning much on average. This is partly a consequence of lax demands and expectations, but it is wishful thinking to imagine that simply increasing faculty demands will produce greater learning. ‘Current cultural norms among U.S. undergraduates support a conception of schooling as an important, but part-time activity. Other parts of life, notably social and leisure activities, are at least as important.’..The college experience is perceived by many students to be, at its core, a social experience. The collegiate culture emphasizes sociability and encourages students to have fun-to do all the things they have not had the chance to do before, or may not have a chance to do after they enter ‘the real world’ of the labor market.”
