We're in Sydney today, as part of the National Foster & Kinship Care Collective (NFKCC), to discuss issues impacting family-based carers at a Federal level. The NFKCC is a voluntary cooperative of state and territory foster and kinship care associations, including Connecting Foster & Kinship Carers SA for South Australia, and our interstate counterparts from Western Australia, Tasmania, Victoria, Queensland and the Northern Territory. There are critical issues that impact all foster and kinship carers, regardless of state and territory borders. The collective is meeting today to strategically plan our advocacy moving forward at a Federal level and ensure it aligns with the issues that matter most to our members. 🎉 Happy New Month Everyone! 🎉 As we step into a new month, i like to reflect on our goals and aspirations. At Black Foster Carers Alliance, we're committed to making a difference in the fostering sector. Our services are tailored to support fostering organisations, local authorities, and those working with looked after children. We WILL become a hub to support foster carers, social workers and care experienced children and adults. We believe in a conscious and intentional strategy to recruit and retain black and minority carers; what are you doing to change things where you work? GAIN SUPPORT AND ADVICE We provide support, advice, training and resources. We aim to empower families with the knowledge and tools they need to support children from diverse backgrounds. WE are here to SUPPORT and be of SERVICE to the sector. WHY IS THE WORK WE ARE DOING IMPORTANT??? A pitch to pitch in this #NationalFosterCareMonth! Children that happen to have contact with the foster care system are a) #children and b) children equally deserving of care and support in a #family unit. Some need temporary support, others need more, but each of them in their own way contribute to the champions that partner with them. And there is something everyone can do to pitch in to the solution. In the abundance of our existence, it is a travesty that the brilliance of some children is dimmed through no fault of their own. Worst, the internalization of this neglect sometimes leads to cerebral and mental health degeneration that compounds over time. Ways to help one or more foster care children - 1. There are about 3.5 million households in LA County. About 30,000 children, plus or minus, in foster care, a fraction of them in search of adoption. Of the 3.5 million households, if you are a household that can provide a loving environment, consider learning more about adoption with an organization like Hillsides. 2. Adopting isn't the only way to help. Consider learning more about being a resource family for a foster care child that needs a temporary accommodation. 3. You can help in other ways, too. You can be part of all those success stories you see and hear about in the news! Can your work team or school sponsor a drive to gather new toiletries or coats or duffel bags that will go to an organization supporting foster care youth? Can your family or friend group commit to gathering $100 worth of pre-teen or teen related fun items (like board games, journals, gift cards) to offer a sense of normalcy during the holidays? Can you donate your hard-earned money to an organization like Hillsides toward the eventual success story of one of these children? Giving is one of the most fulfilling acts. Be the Change: Stand with Foster Carers Foster carers often face unique challenges from navigating complex systems to combating stereotypes, they often shoulder an immense burden. How can you help? Become an Ally Allyship is key to creating a supportive environment for foster carers. It's about standing in solidarity, amplifying their voices, and working towards a more equitable foster care system. Here's how you can be an ally: Educate yourself: Learn about the experiences of Black foster carers and the disparities they face. Challenge stereotypes: Speak out against negative stereotypes and misconceptions. Support Foster carers: Offer practical help, such as volunteering your time or donating to relevant organisations. Advocate for change: Use your voice to advocate for policies that support Black foster families. By taking these steps, you can contribute to a more inclusive and supportive community for Black foster carers.
