#subsidence in #csg #voids in #surat #basin #queensland has been recogised but "make-good" reparations for farmers hare not recognised. A novel methodology for assessing the potential for formation bridging in coal seam gas fields: a case study from southern Queensland In mining, bridging may involve multiple layers that collectively affect the transmission of subsurface deformation to the surface. It does not necessarily include the layer(s) immediately adjacent to the excavated volume as they fall apart on their own (due to weakness) or as part of the adopted ground control approach (Bétournay, 2011). The critical dimensions of the created void for the onset of caving-in depend on the strength and structure of bridging formations, the mining method employed (such as longwall or bord and pillar) and the mining depth. https://lnkd.in/gXNeASzQ

Watch out for the opportunistic and cynical 'win-win-win' rhetoric to come from the mining industry on this. Wrecking the seabed to enrich the few will be framed as: Win#1 - good for jobs (offshore experts apply here) Win#2 - good for growth (hmm, look where that's got us) Win#3 - good for the environment (apparently the completely destroyed seabed will grow back, the disturbed fauna will get over it and big vanadium batteries will enable current lifestyles to continue unabated) #predictablegreenwash https://lnkd.in/gr35WETr

🏔 Mineral Exploration Insights: Rules for Success! Dave Lowell, regarded as one of the most accomplished "#Explorationists" of our modern era, is known for leading some of the greatest discoveries of the last century including #Escondida. According to a Mining.com article, here are Lowell's nine key rules for exploration: 1. Ore Definition: Ore is a rock that can be mined at a profit. 2. Field Discovery: Mines are found in the field, not in the office. 3. Drilling Necessity: Drilling is essential for finding mines. 4. Cost-effective Exploration: Choose cost-effective methods; precision isn't always necessary. 5. Geological Mapping: High-tech tools are less effective compared to geological mapping. 6. Comprehensive Understanding: Knowledge of mining engineering, metallurgy, mine finance, and mineral economics is crucial. 7. Accepting Low Success Rates: Exploration has low success rates; persistence is key. 8. Risk Management: Exploration involves various risks, including political and financial. 9. Independence in Planning: Freedom in planning exploration projects is vital. For more detailed insights into each of these rules, you can refer to the full article here. https://lnkd.in/gjQCZTfj #McClintockGroup #Explor #MineralExploration #Mining #JuniorMining #CriticalMinerals #Strategy

The mining industry is facing increasing pressure for transparency and accountability, with over half of global mines lacking complete data, this has hindered efforts to assess environmental damage and broader impacts on surrounding areas. At Phoenix Tailings, we aim to address this challenge by minimizing the environmental impact of mining waste. Partnering with large operations allows us to lessen their environmental ramifications while increasing their value. Through extracting valuable materials like rare earths, nickel, and iron oxide from tailings, we not only prevent resource waste, but also strive to mitigate environmental risks associated with conventional tailing management practices.

Did you know there's a region of the Pacific Ocean seabed that contains: . . . 10 years of the world’s needs of copper? 100 years of the world’s needs of nickel? 350 years of the world’s needs of manganese? 450 years of the world’s needs of cobalt? And, this week, the International Seabed Authority (ISA) is meeting amid rising calls for a regulatory code on #mining those resources. On the one hand, seabed mining could provide access to essential #metals vital for renewable energy technologies, which could help accelerate the global transition to clean energy. On the other hand, the risks are significant. The deep ocean is a fragile and poorly understood ecosystem. Mining could disrupt marine life, cause irreversible damage, and potentially lead to the loss of unknown species. The long-term environmental impacts are uncertain to say the least. The ISA must create a robust regulatory framework to balance these risks and opportunities. This is a pivotal moment to safeguard our oceans and the future of our planet. The cleanup cost for British Columbia’s Elk Valley river, polluted by toxic materials from Teck Resources Limited’ coal mining activities, could amount to at least C$6.4 billion ($4.7 billion), as indicated by a report from the not-for-profit group Wildsight. The report commissioned by the Kootenay-based environmental organization underscores a substantial disparity between the $1.9 billion required by the province for Teck to reserve for emergency shutdowns and mine reclamation, and the projected expenses of the company’s initiatives to combat selenium pollution resulting from coal mining in B.C.’s Elk Valley. Selenium, a naturally occurring element toxic to fish in high concentrations, has been seeping for decades from waste rock piles surrounding Canadian miner Teck’s coal mines. #mining #coal #Canada

So this is how this is going to play out…. There are currently no regulations in place for deep sea mining. Legislation will be created as per sign-off by those who will be poised to may a huge profit from it, even higher potentially than their current oil and mineral business’s or pay-offs. ‘We’ then destroy the untouched part of the world that we have not managed to access yet ….🌏🤢 Let’s hope not, let’s hope that a plan is devised to take the lessons learnt from land, and therefore, ensure that we take what ‘we’ need, whilst utilising a minimal footprint approach, and limited disruption to marine life. Then ‘we’ can stop mining on land and start to ‘make good’! 🤞 Do you think ‘we’ will work from lessons learnt or will the greed of a few, with intent to bleed the planet dry, just move the problems with mining from land to our wonderful oceans? https://lnkd.in/eiAtdYhe
