June is Pride Month, a time to celebrate the history, existence, and resistance of LGBTQ+ individuals worldwide. Their fight for equal rights continues, even in our schools. Inclusive books are being removed, students face discrimination, and LGBTQ+ youth and staff feel unsafe. Let's honor Pride by standing up for LGBTQ+ youth: speak up for inclusion in public education at your next school board meeting. Creating inclusive learning spaces starts with funding. Attend a local budget hearing or school district meeting and ask critical questions: - How is staff training on pronouns and gender identity conducted? - How does the district support safe and inclusive spaces for LGBTQ+ students? - Is LGBTQ+ inclusion part of the sex ed curriculum? - Are LGBTQIA+ individuals involved in decision-making processes for necessary training and support? Join us in advocating for welcoming, safe, and equitable schools. Your voice matters. Sign up now to receive the tools needed to make a difference. Let's ensure every student feels respected and supported in their educational environment! #PrideMonth #LGBTQ+ #Inclusion

In an era where gender-based discrimination is on the rise, particularly affecting LGBTQ+ students, it's crucial to open dialogues in our schools. Circle practice offers a powerful approach for sharing personal stories, encourages the expression of diverse opinions, and facilitates meaningful discussions on LGBTQ+ topics. It's important to create a regular schedule for these discussions, moving beyond the "heroes and holidays" approach to ensure consistent engagement with LGBTQ+ issues. Additionally, teachers as facilitators are well-trained in creating a supportive environment is key to the success of these circles. By integrating these practices, we can build more inclusive and empathetic school communities where all students feel valued and heard. This approach not only supports LGBTQ+ students but also educates the entire school community, fostering a culture of acceptance and understanding. Inspired by "Circle Forward: Building Restorative School Community" by Carolyn Boyes-Watson and Kay Pranis. #Pride #InclusiveEducation #LGBTQSupport

Happy Pride Month!🏳️🌈🏳️⚧️ As we celebrate LGBTQ+ Michiganders, it's essential to reflect on how we can better support the complex needs of LGBTQ+ students in postsecondary education. According to a 2022 report, "Fewer LGBTQ people experienced a sense of belonging at their college (71.9%) compared to non-LGBTQ people (83.5%). Additionally, more LGBTQ people reported mental health struggles while in college than their non-LGBTQ peers." As we work toward creating a truly equitable education system, it’s important for organizations and institutions to look for ways to build support and inclusion for these students. https://lnkd.in/gBiJQV2Q

Many schools are celebrating 🏳️🌈 PRIDE next month! A few tips to plan for success: 🔢 Keep it age-appropriate. (If it's age-appropriate to do in a straight way, it's age appropriate to do in an LGBTQ+ way. For example, if it is age-appropriate to talk about straight parents, then it is age-appropriate to talk about queer parents.) 📣 Let student voice lead the way. (But avoid burdening your LGBTQ+ student groups with additional work/emotional labor that they haven't asked for.) 📚 Prep the school community in advance with positive invitations and resources to extend the learning at home. 🚸 Safety first. 💜 Focus on joy, excellence, resistance, and community. Enjoy!

From LSE Few LGBTQ+ science and engineering instructors come out to students, despite potential benefits LGBTQ+ science and engineering instructors rarely come out to their undergraduate students, but students do not react negatively and surprisingly report higher rapport when an instructor comes out https://lnkd.in/gyyUNfEg

We’re firm believers that diversity should be celebrated. Yet, according to a 2023 UCLA report, LGBTQ+ youth experience hunger and food insecurity at a rate higher than their peers who do not identify as LGBTQ+. This is partially attributed to LGBTQ+ youth skipping school or avoiding school cafeterias because they are being bullied or feel unsafe, and therefore are missing school meals. When kids are hungry, it's also harder for them to focus in the classroom. This #PrideMonth, we both celebrate LGBTQ+ youth and acknowledge the unique challenges they face. All kids deserve unrestricted access to school meals. All kids deserve to feel safe in the cafeteria. All kids deserve to feel nourished so they can concentrate in class. We will always advocate for this. 🏳️🌈 View the report: https://ow.ly/2qLQ50Sk3No

The rise in LGBTQ hate crimes and incidents in schools across the country has created a hostile environment for many students. Students deserve to feel safe at school – and their belonging and well-being on campus directly affects their ability to succeed academically. At Point, we are empowering students to collectively shape a future that upholds the principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion for all. https://lnkd.in/g6i59E-u
