FANTASTIC article by the American Staffing Association and McKnight Senior Living. 1099 based companies in healthcare are putting buildings at risk legally and financially as well as the residents. I don’t know how senior living facilities continue to use these platforms now knowing the DOLs ruling and the legal responsibility they now hold. Multiple lawsuits are naming senior living buildings as liable because they are instructing these “contractors” which leads to misclassification and these nurses are winning the lawsuits. If you’re a building needing help, go with a company that W2’s their staff. It’s safer for everyone involved.

A Friday afternoon care recruitment tip for you... You need to pay a noticeable difference between 'Care Assistants/Support Workers' and 'Senior Care Assistants/Field Care Supervisors.' Too many companies are doing this: 'Care Assistants/Support Workers' - £12 an hour 'Senior Care Assistants/Field Care Supervisors' - £12.50 an hour It's madness to think people will take on a lot more responsibility for an extra 50p an hour. Pay Senior Care Staff/Field Care Supervisors £13,£14,£15 an hour and you'll quickly see the calibre of people applying for these roles. It ALSO gives your current Care Assistants/Support Workers a huge incentive to want to do further NVQ's and take on more responsibility. Guess what happens then? I work with a lot of people who were already working with other agencies but wanted to leave them due to things such as poor customer service, always experiencing pay delays and rude consultants. Dispatchers are truly the unsung heroes of Public Safety. They are most often the first contact citizens have with Public Safety personnel during an emergency or crisis. They hear the raw, uncensored, and emotional first reports of what has happened and attempt to make sense out of the chaos and determine what is occurring and if Law Enforcement, Fire, or Emergency Medical Services, or all of them, should be sent. Unfortunately, Public Safety Dispatching is suffering from the recruiting and retention crisis that is effecting all of Law Enforcement. Dispatch Centers are most often understaffed and the Dispatchers are working endless hours of overtime, someplace up to 30 hours in a pay period, to fill empty positions. This is causing the Dispatchers to endure additional stress, reduced time with family and friends, and no down to unwind from the hectic work of 9-1-1. Dispatchers are burning out and leaving the profession, often leaving for jobs with much less pay but less hours and a better quality of life. My wife loved being a Public Safety Dispatcher or Dispatcher Supervisor for 36+ years, but the last 22 years her Dispatcher Center was constantly under staffed. The constant overtime and running short on shifts eventually caused her to leave the profession she loved and take a Records Supervisor position at another Law Enforcement Agency. There are very few people that have the talent, skill and abilities to be a Public Safety Dispatcher. Because of this we can not afford to lose the talented people we have. Public Safety Agencies that have Dispatch Centers need to be proactive when it comes to addressing their retention and recruitment issues and their employees’ wellness. Agencies need to prioritize this and make a concentrate effort to deal with it. We in Public Safety can no longer neglect the Dispatch Center.
