Donald Trump is looking for young dudes on the internet. But he recently appeared on both of their very popular internet talk shows. It's part of Trump's outreach to young dudes. But how many of the shows' fans are old enough to vote? It's no secret that one of Donald Trump's election strategies is to seek out young men. That group doesn't tend to vote that much (neither do young women) but seems quite Trump-curious. And in a tight race, that could make all the difference. That's why Trump had Dana White, CEO of the young men-friendly Ultimate Fighting Championship, introduce him at the Republican National Convention. And it's why Trump has been making a series of appearances with internet celebrities beloved by young men, including Logan Paul, Adin Ross, the Nelk boys and, most recently, Theo Von. There's a good chance that not all of those names are familiar to you, a grown-up reading Business Insider. (Though it's very possible you saw the clip of Von explaining cocaine's allure to Trump this week: "Cocaine will turn you into a damn owl, homie. You know what I'm saying? You'll be out on your own porch. You'll be your own streetlamp.") If that's the case, let me direct you to this explainer by Max Read, which gives you a brief tour of the Trump-friendly young dudes that other young dudes like. Read's catch-all term for them: "dipshits." But I also wanted to flag Read's discussion of Trump's strategy, which makes a point I don't see in other Trump/dudes discussions: The thing about dipshit outreach strategy is that while you can invent a kind of clever logic to support it — i.e., the audience for Logan Paul and Adin Ross consists of guys who have some kind of natural affinity for Trump, but are also low-propensity voters (due to being dipshits), and a consistent media campaign among them might increase turnout in the dipshit community — in practice a sizable majority of the dipshit audience is 15-year-old boys who are not legally able to vote. If you have teenage boys who aren't old enough to vote in your family (raises hand), then the fact that the dipshits are enormously popular with teenage boys who aren't old enough to vote will not be news to you. But, as we keep pointing out here, the internet consumption habits of young people remain a mystery to lots of older people. Which, again, is one of the reasons they don't understand why YouTube is so enormous. To be fair, the exact demographic breakdown of the dipshits' audience isn't readily available, in part because it's not in YouTube and other platforms' best interests to be specific about this stuff. So we're just guessing here...

To my friends attending the White House creator economy event: I’m not involved in political work anymore, but after spending over 10 years in digital news sponsorships and working with creators on political campaigns and advocacy across party lines, here are a few things I hope to see from today’s event: **Focus on Policy, Not Politics: Creators often avoid politics to keep their audience. The White House can help by giving creators and their teams access to experts and easy-to-understand explanations of policies. Provide them with customizable graphics and content. This way, creators can share important information based on facts without getting too political. **Get Gen Z to Vote: The biggest impact this event could have is boosting voter registration and getting Gen Z to vote. Encouraging people to vote isn’t political—it’s important. The question is, how can creators and platforms spread this message effectively? Think about creating challenges, following trends, and offering incentives for creators who want to get involved. **Facts Matter: In 2017, I worked on a partnership between Good Mythical Morning and the U.S. Surgeon General to educate teens about the dangers of e-cigarettes. It took 18 months of careful work with government agencies to get everything right. The White House should make it easier for creators to quickly access accurate information and get approval from government agencies. Most importantly, enjoy the day! Can Apps Turning Us Into Unpaid Lobbyists?: "Today's most effective corporate lobbying no longer involves wooing members of Congress..." writes the Wall Street Journal. Instead the lobbying sector "now works in secret to influence lawmakers with the help of an unlikely ally: you." [Lobbyists] teamed up with PR gurus, social-media experts, political pollsters, data analysts and grassroots organizers to foment seemingly organic public outcries designed to pressure lawmakers and compel them to take actions that would benefit the lobbyists' corporate clients... By the middle of 2011, an army of lobbyists working for the pillars of the corporate lobbying establishment — the major movie studios, the music industry, pharmaceutical manufacturers and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce — were executing a nearly $100 million campaign to win approval for the internet bill [the PROTECT IP Act, or "PIPA"]. They pressured scores of lawmakers to co-sponsor the legislation. At one point, 99 of the 100 members of the U.S. Senate appeared ready to support it — an astounding number, given that most bills have just a handful of co-sponsors before they are called up for a vote. When lobbyists for Google and its allies went to Capitol Hill, they made little headway. Against such well-financed and influential opponents, the futility of the traditional lobbying approach became clear. If tech companies were going to turn back the anti-piracy bills, they would need to find another way. It was around this time that one of Google's Washington strategists suggested an alternative strategy. "Let's rally our users," Adam Kovacevich, then 34 and a senior member of Google's Washington office, told colleagues. Kovacevich turned Google's opposition to the anti-piracy legislation into a coast-to-coast political influence effort with all the bells and whistles of a presidential campaign. The goal: to whip up enough opposition to the legislation among ordinary Americans that Congress would be forced to abandon the effort... The campaign slogan they settled on — "Don't Kill the Internet" — exaggerated the likely impact of the bill, but it succeeded in stirring apprehension among web users. The coup de grace came on Jan. 18, 2012, when Google and its allies pulled off the mother of all outside influence campaigns. When users logged on to the web that day, they discovered, to their great frustration, that many of the sites they'd come to rely on — Wikipedia, Reddit, Craigslist — were either blacked out or displayed text outlining the detrimental impacts of the proposed legislation. For its part, Google inserted a black censorship bar over its multicolored logo and posted a tool that enabled users to contact their elected representatives. "Tell Congress: Please don't censor the web!" a message on Google's home page read. With some 115,000 websites taking part, the protest achieved a staggering reach. Did you know that changing verbs to nouns can make you more persuasive? What about using "don't" instead of "can't" in order to increase the likelihood of achieving your goals? Wait, hold on, you mean to tell me you didn't know that asking for advice can make you look smarter?  Fine, I didn't know any of these things either before reading the aptly named "Magic Words" and talking to its very incredible author, Jonah Berger. Our members were given an inside look at the new science of language and provided with tips that will help them become more persuasive, appear more confident and more likely to achieve their goals. Of course, we spent time discussing his classic, best-seller, "Contagious," as well. Regarding verbs to nouns: "So more recently, some researchers looked at the same idea applied to a different situation and that's voting. They saw whether we could get people to turn out to vote, a big and consequential behavior for adults, by using language. And so for some people they said, "Hey, would you please go vote?" But for others, they asked, "Would you please be a voter?" Now again, the difference between "vote" and "voter" is even smaller, right? There's only one letter, adding an "R" to the end of the word "vote." Yet that one letter led to about a 15% increase in people's likelihood of turning out at the polls. And so, while quite powerful, this raises an important question, why? Why is "helper" more effective than "help"? Why is "voter" more effective than "vote"? And it all comes down to the difference between actions and identities, right? We all know that we should take certain actions, vote, help, and a variety of other things, but we're busy. We don't have time. What we care more about than taking certain actions is holding desired identities. We all want to see ourselves as smart and healthy and knowledgeable. And so we engage in actions to support those identities. We wanna see ourselves as healthy. Maybe we eat a salad once in a while or we exercise. We want to see ourselves as smart, so we read the newspaper, stay up to date on current events. We do things to hold those desirable identities. But what that means is, well, if we can turn actions into identities, we can make people more likely to take those actions. Helping? Sure, I know I'm supposed to help, but I'm pretty busy. Being a helper, well, wait, now helping becomes an opportunity to show myself and others that I am a helper. Well, now I'm much more likely to do it. Or similarly voting. Yeah, I know I should vote but if voting becomes an opportunity, I'm going to show myself and others that I am a voter, well, now I'm more likely to do it." Sharing this message from, JILL KONRATH - I’ve fallen far short of my lifetime goals. In 6th grade, I wrote a paper about what I wanted to be when I grew up. Unable to decide on one profession, I wrote about my three competing options. I wanted to be a translator at the UN, the first woman on Mars, and a senator from the great state of Minnesota. Yes, all these are still possible, but unlikely! But not long ago, it dawned on me that I could leverage my What’s Really Possible platform to accomplish even more if I ran for President. As President, my focus would be on pulling people together to take action on the many things we already agree on. We’d figure out how to create the future we want to live in. Recognizing that the existing political parties wouldn’t embrace me, I decided to create my own—the Common Sense Party. I imagined my website, filled with my values, the initiatives I’d support, how we’d get things done and the projected impact. I envisioned speaking around the country and appearances on major news channels. My campaign would be upbeat and energizing, focusing on what we could accomplish if we worked together. Knowing that no one would consider me a serious candidate, I decided to have fun with that too. So, I went to GoDaddy and got myself a website domain: Don’t Vote for Jill I saw people wearing my Don’t Vote for Jill campaign buttons and neighborhoods filled with Don’t Vote for Jill signs. I started prepping to take my initiative to TikTok and Instagram. But the truth is, I really don’t want to be President. What I really want is for people to get involved, to become knowledgeable about their options, to read/listen to multiple news sources, and to … Do Something Yes, as citizens, it’s imperative to get involved now—before the upcoming election. Here are some ideas for you. Voter Registration is crucial. I love what The Civic Center is doing to get 18-year-olds to register across the country. Every day, we see a story somewhere about one party to a claim of likeness or trademark displaying an amateur-hour understanding of such concepts. Do you know your rights concerning your brand or likeness? Do you have brand and marketing folks who do? If not, let's talk. This example is an interesting crossover into the world of politics and public figures. In this case, Haley has little to no claim. She's a politician, public official, and candidate for office. She exists in a different space than you or I as private citizens, and the PAC in question is doing nothing illegal or untoward in their brand/DBA choice. It's been this way for decades, and a matter of easily-confirmed precedent. When targeted by such demands, it is wise to have good advice from the marketing wing, but confirmation from the legal wing. This group is right to stand their ground. They're not defaming Haley, they're not making overtures that they speak for her, and there is no chance of market confusion on this topic. This isn't the solution to the problem. The problem isn't that David Trone is spending enormous amounts of money. It's that he is spending his money wisely and strategically, talking about issues that matter to people in a way that regular people find relatable. And her problem isn't the staff. It's that the campaign lacks a sharp, precise message that defines her personal values, her principal priorities and how people's lives will be better off if she, and not David Trone, is seated in the U.S. Senate. Layering new staff on top of the old staff, without solving this structural flaw, will not change the trajectory of this race. If anything, it will only make her campaign more cumbersome, more top-heavy and less agile. Just the observation of someone who is not affiliated with either campaign.
