⚠ SIGNIFICANT INCIDENTS ⚠ In the past 9 months, there have been 5 significant incidents involving the hydraulic crowd cylinders on load haul dump (LHD) machines in underground coal mines. Four of these incidents have occurred in the past 4 months. This has prompted the NSW Resources Regulator to issue a safety bulletin to industry. This is a topic close to our hearts here at R&D Mining and we take this stuff extremely seriously. "OEMs and suppliers of implements to be attached to LHDs must provide any information necessary to ensure that the LHD can be used without risks to safety when implements are attached as designed, including accurate mass and centre of mass." 𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐚𝐢𝐫 𝐝𝐨𝐰𝐧 𝐚 𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐞? Did you realise that compressed air is still widely used as a power source in the mining industry? That’s because it’s easy to handle and very safe. But the harsh environmental conditions down a mine make tough demands on the miners and their equipment. This was what a well-known German company operating in the salt-mining sector discovered to its cost. The company produces concrete for filling abandoned mining cavities and for efficiency and logistics reasons the compressed air needed to operate the machinery is generated and processed underground. Unfortunately, the harsh operating conditions resulted in repeated failures of the refrigeration dryers used to dehumidify the compressed air. The ultra-moist, dust-laden intake air caused corrosion damage and ultimately the dryers broke down after only two or three years of service. The necessary repairs cost around 80% of a new dryer. What to do? See our next post. #compressedair #miningindustry #miningtechnology #corrosiondamage #miningefficiency

Behind every mine's success lies meticulous work that ensures safety and efficiency. Surveyors are pivotal in safeguarding machinery and optimising operations. Despite its subtle appearance, correct machine alignment is a linchpin in plant productivity. Did you know? Up to 50% of machine breakdowns result from poor alignment. Misaligned shafts and couplings strain motors, pumps, and gearboxes, risking critical failures and costly downtime. Regular alignment checks are essential for maintaining peak performance and minimising operational disruptions Discover more ways we support the mining industry here: https://lnkd.in/geyg7iGe #miningsurveying #miningaustralia #ruralsurveyor #fifo #ISGroup

Don't let dewatering hold up your operations 💦 The dewatering team at a major Australian gold mine was under the pump to remove water from their pits so they could begin production. But their dewatering hoses only lasted 3-6 months before tearing. It was causing massive delays and even bigger expenses for their mining operation. Dewatering hoses are dragged across the pit floor’s rough surface, so need to be durable both inside and out 💪 We helped them choose a high-pressure rated hose with a tough outer layer and integrally built end connections to provide extra resistance to tearing at the flanges. We also suggested simplifying the pump set-up to provide more clearance around the skids for easier pump maintenance. The Slurryflex hoses are now lasting more than 4 years - 8x longer wear life It’s put an end to dewatering delays. They can get in, drain the water, and have the pit ready to go. 💧 #gold #mineralprocessing #miningengineering

💣 Optimizing Explosive Use: Enhancing Safety and Reducing Environmental Impact 🌿 In the mining sector, the choice of explosives is crucial for both performance and safety. Recent advancements highlight that using bulk emulsions instead of traditional ANFO (Ammonium Nitrate Fuel Oil) can lead to significant improvements in both areas. 🔹 Increased Safety: Bulk emulsions are less sensitive than ANFO, reducing the risk of accidental detonations and enhancing overall safety during blasting operations. 🔹 Environmental Benefits: These emulsions produce fewer harmful byproducts and have a lower environmental impact compared to ANFO, contributing to more sustainable mining practices. 🔹 Balancing Performance and Safety: The key challenge is finding the right balance between explosive performance and safety. Bulk emulsions offer controlled energy release, which can lead to more efficient blasting with fewer safety concerns. How do you manage the balance between explosive performance and safety in your operations? Share your strategies and insights on optimizing explosive use while minimizing risks and environmental impacts. Let’s work together to advance our industry towards safer and more environmentally responsible practices! #MiningSafety #ExplosiveOptimization #BulkEmulsions #ANFO #EnvironmentalImpact #SustainableMining #MiningInnovation

The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) has several regulations and resources to help prevent roof falls in mines, including: Reporting roof falls MSHA requires the reporting of roof falls in active workings, especially if they impair ventilation or travel. This helps MSHA and mine operators identify hazardous trends and evaluate the effectiveness of roof control systems. Roof control plans MSHA requires that roof control plans are reviewed every six months, and that operators revise the plans if roof falls indicate they are inadequate. Training MSHA has resources to help train miners on safety practices, including how to recognize and understand safe work procedures. Ground support MSHA recommends installing ground support in roof and ribs when conditions warrant.
