Where in the world is Riggs & Co? If you can't tell by the iconic wall in the video, today we're at the Detroit airport. Here are some things you may not know about DTW! ✈️ Established in 2002 by Michigan Public Act 90 (2002), the Airport Authority is an independent agency responsible for the operation of Detroit Metropolitan Airport, Willow Run Airport and Crosswinds Marsh. The Airport Authority directly employs more than 500 individuals across a number of disciplines, while the airports themselves are home to more than 18,000 jobs. A report produced by University of Michigan-Dearborn in January 2014 estimated the economic impact of DTW at $10.2 billion across the State of Michigan. Activity at the airport stimulates more than 86,000 jobs. A similar study conducted for YIP in 2007 estimated a $200 million economic impact with 2,000 jobs generated. Here's hoping less is more! In advance of the spring break rush, we're trialing a bypassed signal at JFK T5 to improve traffic flows. We're grateful for our T6 project and Port Authority partners' willingness to trial something unconventional to make the customer experience as positive as possible in this sea of construction activity. Traffic improvements aside, pro tip - the AirTrain is once again running with strong headways and is your best bet for a reliable journey to JFK. If you're taking a car at peak times (and reminder - those peak times start much earlier in the morning than you think!), consider dropping off or picking up at Federal Circle or the Lefferts Blvd. Kiss & Fly and taking a free journey on the AirTrain to your terminal. Roadways will be dramatically improved once all of the terminal projects at JFK are complete, but in the meantime, roadway capacity is down. Take the AirTrain and you'll probably be glad you did!

What if everyone at the Pentagon drove to work? This was the provocative question that my colleague Jim Watson, AICP with Wells + Associates posed as part of a Session on “Evaluating Transportation Management Plans (TMP) for Federal Worksites” at the American Planning Association Federal Planning Division 2024 Workshop. The answer of course, with over 20,000 employees at the Pentagon, is crippling traffic congestion. The solution to ensure traffic congestion and a minimized is a TMP. But how do you know whether that TMP is working? Co-presenter Thomas Hamed, AICP with AM2 explained the evaluation methods that they use to ensure the Pentagon’s TMP is working. It starts by measuring use of Parking, Carpool/Slugging, Bicycles and Transit to see what has changed. But collecting data on an ongoing basis is key to evaluating TMPs.

Good to see this new report issued today by TRB and their acknowledgement of many contributors including Andrew Burbridge from #TMR and myself. As noted in the report, the United States faces a road-safety crisis. The number of fatal crashes per mile traveled has been climbing for the past decade. The fastest growing type of crash is those involving vulnerable road users—pedestrians, bicyclists, and others who share the roads with motor vehicles. A reversal of these trends will not only require high-quality, evidence-based safety research but also processes for ensuring that the results are implemented in the field. The authors make a series of recommendations to the U.S. Department of Transportation, including calling for the need to prioritize and align national road safety research across federal agencies and state departments of transportation.
