I recently had the privilege of hosting a fantastic roundtable🗣️ discussion of senior marketers from the APAC region as part of an Accenture Song effort to bring together peers to discuss relevant and hot topics of the day. On this occasion, we discussed how APAC can (continue to) take its place on the world🌏 stage. And wow, did it bring out a lot of great opinions. I've summarized some of the areas we explored below: (1) It's not enough to bring global leaders to the region, either for visits or for "stints". Asian leaders need to also take their ideas💡 to the global stage. (2) Thanks to the connectivity and immediacy created by generally mobile first platforms, global trends📈 are already being shaped in the region here. But for global teams, its not always easy to see how to leverage these in other environments. (3) Global is not a physical location🏢. Call it a central or HQ . Global should be that: global. Ideas can come from anywhere. Execution can be done anywhere. A truly global organization re-imagines its entire operating model based on both ideas and execution. (4) There really is no such thing as APAC. Ultimately, what matters is relevance✅ (usually that means revenue) - and with APAC being highly fragmented, that relevant is usually at the country level. (5) Having said that, you can't measure📏 relevance only in the "now". The region needs representation to ensure an eye on the future and where bets can be placed especially with shifting demographics. Our region is perhaps unique in its scale and in the sheer breadth of advancement. (6) Finally, just like mobile-first thinking created an opportunity for APAC to "leapfrog🐸" ahead of other regions, GenAI is seen as the next great equalizer, especially given government investments in that area. Somehow all of the above came out in only an hour, but what an hour it was! As we run the session under Chatham house rules, I won't mention our guests here, but if they happen to see this - I thank them for such a rich and valuable discussion.
