An detailed analysis of which challenges in software engineering teams are most frequent is still missing. As teams are more international, it is more frequent that their members have different human values as well as different communication habits. The research team found that individuals’ values do not largely influence the frequency and criticality of challenges within a team. However, diversity in nationalities and a higher degree of team virtualisation do seem to have an influence in the form of more frequent and critical challenges: > “We found no evidence for links between human values and challenges. We found some significant links between the number of distinct nationalities in a team and certain challenges, with less frequent and critical challenges occurring if 2-3 different nationalities were present compared to a team having members of just one nationality or more than three. A higher degree of virtualization seems to increase the frequency of some human challenges.”

Here are some key takeaways: - Career Progression: Expect a more measured pace in career growth and promotions due to the shift from the zero interest rate policy (ZIRP) era to a more constrained capital environment in tech. - Product-Centric Focus: Business and product needs are increasingly prioritized over new technology adoption and technical debt reduction. New features, bug fixes and stable tech stack choices will now more than ever take precedence over shiny new tech's POC, refactors and technical debt cleanups. - Full-Stack Proficiency: As teams become leaner, full-stack developers who can manage end-to-end product ownership are gaining prominence. Domain expertise will continue to exist but without the barrier of a specific language or framework. - Expanded Responsibilities: Engineers are increasingly expected to incorporate QA and DevOps tasks into their roles. Explore how you can perform these roles apart from development potentially aided by AI. - Cross-Platform Languages: Languages like JavaScript, TypeScript and Kotlin that operate across multiple environments enabling devs to work on the edge and the cloud together are becoming more valuable, especially as startups aim to streamline their tech stacks. - Business Acumen: Engineers who understand product and business aspects and contribute ideas for cost savings, productivity improvements, and revenue generation, will stand out. Talk about that feature you researched that the competitor has or that new SaaS tool that saves money, in your standups. - Career Resilience: Focus on building a strong professional brand through publishing blogs on your work, public speaking, and showcasing your work to enhance long-term career security. - AI Integration: Embrace AI tools like Claude daily and explore AI-powered plugins for your dev environments, communication apps, browsers, etc to boost productivity and quality of output.
