Perspective... and reality. While a paper confirms that, indeed, there could have been an increase in ILI. According to the study (ref1), over the following 9 months, TIV recipients had an increased risk of virologically-confirmed non-influenza infections (relative risk: 4.40; 95% confidence interval: 1.31-14.8). But the study has so many limitations that such results should be questioned. Especially that the Cochrane Review (ref 2) analyzing the entire literature on such comes up with a totally different conclusion showing that injected influenza vaccines probably have a small protective effect against influenza and ILI (moderate-certainty evidence), as 71 people would need to be vaccinated to avoid one influenza case, and 29 would need to be vaccinated to avoid one case of ILI. As is the clinical relevancy of such ILI, the question remains in term of these are significant or not. Smokescreen by Physicians for Informed Consent? Yes, indeed. As stated by the authors of the first reference: ¨Our results are limited by the small sample size and the small number of confirmed infections. Despite this limitation, we were able to observe a statistically significant increased risk of confirmed non-influenza respiratory virus infection among TIV recipients. A negative association between serologic evidence of influenza infection and confirmed non-influenza virus infection in winter 2009 was not statistically significant (odds ratio, 0.27; 95% CI, .01–2.05). One must be cautious in interpreting serology in children who have received TIV. Finally, acute URTI incidence was based on self-report with regular telephone reminders, and we may have failed to identify some illnesses despite rigorous prospective follow-up.¨ On the other front, the flu vaccine does not increase the risk of major infections like COVID (ref3).
