Faced with the challenge of curating a distinctive experience for someone who seemingly possesses everything one could desire, I went on a mission to transcend expectations. I went next door to a quaint convenience store and found a small treasure: a whimsical travel cup adorned with a teddy bear and a charming message – "smile." With this inspiring find in hand, I seized the opportunity to add a touch of genuine warmth into the fabric of this celebration. A personalized note on the cup's back read, "Happy Birthday from your friends at Rooftop at Riverside." It was a small gesture with a profound impact. The unveiling of this unexpected gift was met with astonishment and joy by the birthday goup. The jubilant recipient, overwhelmed with emotion, declared it the most thoughtful gesture she had experienced in a long time. This post from Ken Proctor is spot on with some specific examples of how to have humility in your leadership. In our work with executives, we have discovered that this is something that many leaders have to learn versus a natural character trait. Often times, it is "look at me/chest beating" that earned those battlefield leadership promotions and so there is "unlearning" that individual contributors have to do once they move into leadership to be more others focused.
