Proud to be part of an industry that generates jobs, commerce, economic development and tax revenues to communities across the nation. Proud to champion an industry that promotes a physical, active lifestyle and positive mental health. According to the American Golf Industry Coalition's latest Golf Impact Report, golf impacts nearly two million Americans whose livelihoods directly or indirectly depend on it. The total economic impact of golf in America is estimated at $102 billion, serving 45 million golfers (11% of the U.S. population) and impacts 1.65 million jobs across the country. We spent last week at our Nation's Capital telling this story to congressional leaders and policy-makers as part of the 16th Annual National Golf Day. If you're not an active member of the National Golf Course Owners Association (NGCOA) you're not seeing the full picture. NGCOA Members are among the most thoughtful and successful golf course owners and operators in the business. Join us, it just makes sense. https://lnkd.in/gC4EDyqX

As golfers, we all understand that weather can be unpredictable. But policies like the one shared by L.A. City Golf—where golfers can’t cancel their reservations without forfeiting deposits, even in the case of rain—are confusing and inconvenient for everyone involved. Here’s why this approach doesn’t work for golfers or courses: 1️⃣ Confusion for Golfers: Golfers are left wondering whether they’re expected to show up or not, depending on how the course interprets “inclement weather.” This uncertainty often leads to a flood of calls to the course, creating unnecessary hassle for both golfers and staff. 2️⃣ Workload for Staff: Requiring course staff to make the final call and handle refunds adds an unnecessary administrative burden anytime rain is in the forecast. This slows down operations and frustrates everyone. 3️⃣ Fairness to Golfers: Golfers should have the right to cancel their reservation without penalty when the weather forecast looks poor. It’s unfair to expect players to wait for the course to make a decision when they may already know that conditions aren’t right for them. A better approach? Golf courses should allow golfers to cancel their reservations without penalty when there’s inclement weather in the forecast. It’s a simple, fair policy that reduces confusion, cuts down on administrative work for staff, and shows respect for the golfer’s time and money. What do you think about policies like this? Would you prefer more flexibility when booking in unpredictable weather? The trend of millennials moving to private golf communities, once unlikely due to declining interest in the sport among younger generations, is on the rise. This surprising shift gained momentum during the pandemic, with the National Golf Foundation reporting a record number of rounds played in 2023. Trending with this growing demand, Saltleaf Golf Preserve by London Bay has introduced an all-new public course in Bonita Springs, just a short drive from one of the country's golfing capitals: Naples, FL. Fully reimagined from its members-only roots as Raptor Bay Golf Club, Saltleaf Golf Preserve offers a public play, daily fee model, welcoming golfers of all ages to enjoy not just one, but two courses. While there, players experience the allure of the surrounding Saltleaf community, which includes a marina, nature trails, and 224 luxury condominiums at The Ritz-Carlton Residences, Estero Bay. Could golf be the key to driving residential sales in the neighborhood? Keep reading The Wall Street Journal below:

It's an article I wrote and put online several years ago. It's worth reading. Especially if your backyard golf course is failing. https://lnkd.in/gd8iBkGi If it sounds familiar, write to me, mike@golfmak.com. I'll do a little research on your golf course and neighborhood. It won't cost you anything. Mike Kahn In golf since 1955 mike@golfmak.com.

Shout out to the great work done by Jeff Blunden and the team at Golf Business Advisory Services in releasing their recent report - Governance Standards in Australian Golf Clubs. This made me pause, reflect and write my thoughts in this blog post on the progress we have made at Lonsdale Links in improving our governance capability in recent years. https://lnkd.in/gwwCpvu8

Healthy golf operations generate revenue freely throughout the day. At some facilities, late afternoon and early evening starting times are discounted. And what’s more some facilities offer discounts all day long. Fact: The cost to serve a guest doesn't decline throughout each day. Facilities that co-mingle real value while remaining profitable within a challenging industry will provide lasting value. Golf Professionals: Don't afford competitors an advantage over your operation. Understand facility core values, communicate the message well to players and staff, and protect non-discounted pricing structures as 2025 begins. Bartering with the future of golf is dangerous. Protect your pricing.
