5 Reasons You Should Care About The Summit Of The Future

Before I head back on travel, allow me one last post on the #MSC2024. Here is what we will do differently/better next year: First of all, a lot will remain unchanged. We have developed formats and approaches that have proven their worth over and over again. We will try to resist the temptation to constantly re-invent the wheel. BUT, naturally, there are always lots and lots of things we need to work and improve upon. Here is a small (!) selection: 🏝️We will work even harder to attract relevant voices from the “Global South”. As the Annual Summit of the African Union unfortunately coincides with our conference once again, we may begin a little earlier to allow African participants to attend both events. We will also be traveling to many key states in the global south (including 🇲🇺🇿🇦🇧🇷🇦🇷🇳🇬🇪🇹) to reach out personally and make the case for engagement with our formats. Expect wild posts! 🇺🇸 We will double down on our bipartisan approach to US politics. The new administration will assume power less than three weeks before the #msc2025. Naturally, we hope to see senior members of that administration as well as a balanced congressional delegation in Munich. To that end, we will be spending a lot of time in the US and not just in Washington DC but around the country. Amongst other events, we will be hosting sessions at both, the Democratic and Republican National Conventions in Milwaukee and Chicago respectively. 🇪🇺 We will also work hard to provide the new EU Commission with a platform to present its plans and policies to the world. This will necessitate intensive outreach to the new commissioners and their staff in the weeks leading up to the conference. 🇩🇪 We will try even harder to persuade the federal government to use us! While some departments like the Bundesministerium der Verteidigung or the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) did very well, others did not. 🤝 We will reach out even earlier to partners who are part of the furniture to ensure that we use their presence even better. To the likes of the Atlantic Council, The Brookings Institution, Stiftung Wissenschaft und Politik (SWP), Observer Research Foundation: Watch out! 🛌 Do you remember my dreamlist of events? There is a strong likelihood that you will see many of these events at the #msc2025. As most of them are pretty complex and/or somewhat niche topics (see post on strategic foresight and killer 🍅s) we need to get moving soon. Logistically, we will (once again) rethink our approach to participation categories, our slot logic (the system that ensures that all parallel sessions begin and end simultaneously), and our conferencing platform (the IT platform that lets our participants plan and organize their presence in Munich). If you have any suggestions, advice or good ideas, don’t be shy. Do send them along and we will see what we can do with them. You may even receive cool Munich Security Conference merch in return ;)

The 2024 annual meeting of the World Economic Forum (WEF) is starting today in Davos, Switzerland. The five-day event tagged ‘Davos 2024’ is the 54th annual meeting of the international non-governmental organisation. Under the theme ‘Rebuilding Trust’, the meeting aims to restore collective agency and reinforce the fundamental principles of transparency, consistency and accountability among leaders.
