This week there was a meeting between the NMC (National Motorcyclists Council) and DfT (Department for Transport) to discuss a strategic agenda for motorcycling. Given that UK motorcyclists have been waiting since 2005 to see some Government action, let’s hope that actioning the strategy doesn’t also take 20 years! The agenda a review will include default bus lane access, motorcycle training, testing and licensing. Also, this week the ‘Future of Roads: Pothole Partnership’ group met. There was a discussion of technical issues in highway design, access, maintenance and safety, relating to vulnerable road users including motorcyclists, cyclists and pedestrians. Since 2011, the numbers of motorcyclist KSIs (Killed & Seriously Injured) has flatlined. Only 1-in-5 riders go on to take a motorcycle test. After 8 hours of CBT (Compulsory Basic Training) instruction, of which as little as 4 hours is spent riding a motorcycle, the roads are packed with bikes capable of speeds up to 60mph. The situation is made worse by the vastly increased numbers of fast food delivery riders. It’s no wonder that many are learning by trial and error. It’s the riding errors that cause the most catastrophic injuries. The successful trials are more likely to ingrain poor riding habits. We don’t accept this approach with learner car drivers, so why is it acceptable for young motorcyclists? We will keep advocating for change and opportunities to ride better.

Some more examples of bad driving on display here - this time around horses. It is scary how many people seem to be clueless in what to do around them. Surely people aren't in that much of a hurry that they can't slow down and/or stop if necessary to allow horses past without spooking them? Have some consideration folks. I often think the same when I see drivers do crazy things as soon as they spot a blue light/siren heading their way. https://lnkd.in/eVTN9UJF #drivesafe #drivesafely Driving for Better Business

October is #Motorcyclist #Safety Awareness Month in Victoria, and it's a crucial time to #focus on making our #roads #safer for all riders. Our study on #motorcycle #crashes at intersections in Victoria (https://lnkd.in/gfN7NC-N) analyzed over 7,700 crashes and revealed some key findings: - Older motorcyclists (60+), weekend riders, and those involved in early morning or multiple-vehicle crashes face a higher #risk of #fatal #injuries. - Crashes at t-intersections, rural areas, and uncontrolled intersections are also more dangerous. - On the flip side, female riders, rainy weather, and evening rush hour conditions tend to #lower the #risk of #fatal #injuries. What can we do to improve #safety based on our study? Converting t-intersections and stop or give-way intersections to all-way stop controls could reduce crash severity. It's also vital to raise #awareness among older riders about how age-related changes can increase both crash risks and injury severity. Wearing protective gear, avoiding excessive speed, and never riding under the influence of alcohol or drugs are also important! Let's work together to create safer roads for #motorcyclists "It doesn’t matter if you’re on two or four wheels, we can all do our part to keep everyone safe on the roads - Motorcycling Australia." With an alarming increase in the number of motorcyclists killed on Victorian roads this year, we've partnered with road safety authorities to urge riders and drivers to keep safety at front of mind. Led by the Motorcycle Community Engagement Panel (MCEP) with the TAC, Victoria Police and the Department of Transport and Planning, October marks the third annual Motorcycle Awareness Month encouraging motorists and motorbike riders to share the road. So far this year, 52 motorcyclists have died on Victoria’s roads, close to 50% higher than at the same time last year when 35 motorcyclists had died. “Motorcyclist Awareness Month is an opportunity for us to engage with the Victorian community and educate road users on how we can all play a role in keeping each other safe, every road user should feel safe, no matter how they get around,” said the TAC's Samantha Cockfield “Our thoughts go out to all the families and loved ones of people killed by road trauma, the ripple effects of these deaths are far-reaching, and we can’t become immune to the increase in lives lost on our roads.” For more information: • Visit the MAM Facebook page here https://lnkd.in/eQapnPCx •Read the full TAC media release here on the TAC website https://lnkd.in/gY7T4WSY #TACVictoria #roadsafetyawareness #motorcyclists #ridersafety #sharetheroad

One-off hacks have their place and serve a purpose. There are times these are needed to fill a void; however, it’s important to remember their purpose and place. Earlier this week, it was reported a Formula 1 team was using Excel to track 20,000 parts for their cars (https://t.co/HGyjqCdJiV). While this spreadsheet served a purpose, this weekend it has finally caught up and hurt the team. One of the drivers crashed in practice and the team has reported they don’t have a 3rd car as a backup. The reason for not having a backup? “It is a reflection of how behind we were in the winter period and an illustration of why we need to go through significant change in order to get ourselves in a better position for the future.” (https://bit.ly/3TwbMTz) While balancing between building with speed for today and a solution for future needs, don’t forget the decisions today can come with a future cost.
