  • History has left only traces of the experience of girlhood, yet traces do remain, poignant and important. They tell the stories of girls and young women and the central role they have played in our history. "Traces of Girlhood" an exhibition at Como House by Heritage Victoria and the National Trust of Australia (Victoria) unveils the resilience, creativity, and resourcefulness of 19th and early 20th-century girls in Australia. Explore their lives through handiwork, scrapbooks, writing, artifacts, and photos. The exhibition runs until 20 October, and is open on Saturdays and Sundays between 1pm and 4pm. • Today we pause and pay our respects to the men who went to work on the morning of 15 October 1970 and never came home to their families and loved ones. Thirty-five construction workers tragically lost their lives and 18 were injured when the West Gate Bridge collapsed during its construction. They played an important role in the bridge’s construction which today is a vital connection between the city and the west.

  • We know roads are the lifeblood of our communities, ensuring people and goods reach their destinations efficiently and maintaining this network is essential for safe and smooth movement. That’s why we're investing $964 million into maintaining Victoria’s roads - it’s the largest single-year investment in road maintenance. Our crews will handle hundreds of projects, from on-road repairs to maintaining bridges, traffic lights, and signage. This effort covers the entire state, from metro freeways to regional roads, making them safer, stronger, and smoother. We'll keep the community informed about the timing and locations of these works and any disruptions. Find out more visit https://bit.ly/4dLx8UU

  • Good manners matter – especially on public transport. From October, you’ll start to notice posters across the network and social content on your feed, reminding everyone about the small actions that make a big difference in our daily commute. Customer research has highlighted some prevalent issues: · Not giving up priority seats · Not waiting for people to exit before boarding · Placing bags on seats when crowded · Taking up extra seats · Loud conversations and speakerphone use These behaviours are not just inconvenient; they’re deemed poor etiquette by fellow passengers. Our goal is to captivate and energise Victorians with messaging that encourages everyone to do the right thing. Together, let’s create a more considerate and enjoyable public transport experience for all.

  • October is Motorcyclist Awareness Month. With motorcyclist usage growing and motorcyclists being more vulnerable to injury than other road users, saving riders’ lives and preventing injuries remain a critical road safety challenge. That’s why we’re working with the Motorcycling Community Engagement Panel, Transport Accident Commission (TAC) and Victoria Police to create more awareness of motorcyclists to keep them safer on our roads. Follow Motorcyclist Awareness Month on Facebook to find out more: https://bit.ly/45KNNUN.

We have an update on the Arden Precinct! The Expression of Interest (EOI) process has closed, and we’re pleased with the level of interest from the private sector. This is the first step in a multi-staged process to select a partner(s) to share the vision for the precinct, including delivering more homes, creating more jobs, and boosting economic growth. We are now evaluating all submissions and will soon invite shortlisted bidders to the Request for Proposal stage. The Arden Precinct offers a great opportunity for industry leaders to drive urban renewal and support the Victorian Government’s Housing Statement. #MoreHomesForVictorians #Arden #DevelopmentVictoria

  • This is the Amazon Shipwreck in Inverloch. Built in the UK, the Amazon sailed for Melbourne in 1863 but encountered a hurricane off Cape Otway, forcing it to beach in Inverloch. Parts of the ship are scattered across the beach. Recently exposed by strong weather, the shipwreck is listed on Heritage Victoria’s Maritime Heritage at Risk register. The exposed section is a piece of the hull from the bow, just a sixth of the entire hull, with double that still underwater. The exposure and movement of the Amazon is a natural part of how historic shipwrecks break up over centuries. Heritage Victoria is working to manage the shipwreck and its artefacts for the future.
