Empowering Communities Through Art Ownership: Lessons from Argentina At RadicalxChange, we're on a mission to rethink the core building blocks of our society - exploring new models that can unlock more equitable, sustainable, and community-empowering outcomes. And one area we've been particularly excited about is reimagining the traditional paradigm of art ownership. Last week, our EU and LATAM Coordinator Malik Lakoubay had the opportunity to share our work on Partial Common Ownership (PCO) at Hashtag Eutopía in Buenos Aires, Argentina. PCO is a new economic framework that moves beyond absolute private property rights, creating a middle ground between rent and ownership. The key is that artworks are not owned outright by individuals, but instead are passed between temporary "stewards" who have a responsibility to support the communities that the art is connected to. Later this year, some of these community-based artworks will be auctioned off online through the Aerocene Foundation's "Fairclouds" project, with all proceeds going directly to the Salinas Grandes and Laguna de Guayatayoc communities in northern Argentina. These communities have faced devastating impacts from lithium extraction, with their land and water resources being exploited by large corporations. However, through innovative models like PCO, art is being leveraged as a tool for resistance, resilience, and self-determination. We believe this is just the beginning of a new frontier where creativity, technology, and social impact can converge to drive transformative change. If you're interested in learning more or potentially becoming a steward of one of these artworks, be sure to check out cloudcities.org. A huge thanks to Malik and our partners at Serpentine and Aerocene for helping bring this vision to life. We're excited to see what the future holds as we continue to push the boundaries of what's possible. Photos courtesy of Fanny Lakoubay.

[KONTEJNER | bureau of contemporary art praxis – Experiments with Sustainable Venue Management] The Zagreb pilot explores economic sustainability and community engagement for KONTEJNER | bureau of contemporary art praxis’s new venue, a small center for contemporary art practices. The main objectives are to develop more sustainable and diversified funding models to support the space and to foster community development by reaching new audiences and partners and turning them into long-term supporters. To achieve this, several experimental actions are being developed and tested: > Establishing a new company > Monetizing spatial resources > Designing membership models for citizens and partners > Collaborating with architectural experts to explore new uses for the venue’s outdoor space These initiatives aim to create a new organizational ecosystem that integrates circular economy models and social entrepreneurship, generating benefits beyond the venue itself. cc - Ena Hodzic, Jadrana Curkovic, Ilaria Bondavalli, Aurélie Delater

A big focus in the Design School this year is about regenerative finance and the creation of bioregional funding ecosystems. We already have a great archive of recorded webinars and workgroups devoted to these arenas. When Penny L. Heiple and Joe Brewer started engaging in "bioregional activations" in 2022, it quickly became clear that they would need to help landscape leaders get financial support. This was a primary goal for helping Earth Regeneration to happen at large enough scales. Now that several landscape teams are funded, we have shifted toward learning exchanges among bioregions as a way to help other local leaders to organize themselves -- with the intention of creating collaborative budgets, shared visions, and landscape strategies that can attract funding to support local efforts. We see the Regenerative Finance Lab as a space for cultivating these kinds of real-world activities. Join us in the Design School if you would like to get involved! https://lnkd.in/guvJkrgm

ABOUT ARCOSANTI In the 1970’s, visionary Paolo Solari’s goal of Arcosanti was to explore the concept of arcology, combining architecture and ecology, to create a dense urban environment minimizing ecological impact while maximizing efficient use of resources, such as space, energy, and water. The idea is to create a self-contained ecosystem that combines residential, commercial, and agricultural spaces within a compact and integrated design. The futuristic structures inspired George Lucas in his design of Tatooine for Star Wars, and continues to be a destination for those studying community in the context of harmonizing with the environment. Social innovation labs are collaborative spaces where diverse stakeholders can co-create and test innovative solutions to complex social issues. Innovation labs strive to be responsive, iterative, and forward-looking. But as the social landscape changes rapidly, experts in the field have paused ask: what's the future of labs? UM Community Innovation Lead, Brent Wellsch, reflects on his time at the Future of Labs gathering last month, which brought together some of the most experienced practitioners and conveners of social innovation labs from Canada and beyond: “My most fundamental takeaway has been contemplating the need to intentionally articulate our desired future, or range of futures, within a given context to create a clear direction to build towards. ” Read more on our blog: https://bit.ly/3zl29ka

Car-Optional Innovation District approved in Oxford, England - this is the future The typical Innovation District is car-centric, and conceived more as an office park or a factory than a Neighbourhood. Oxford University is innovating again with a model built around amazing discoveries and inventions but also around families and living, where cars are allowed as guests and allowed a small share of the footprint This is the future, today

Design often carries labels—too often reduced to aesthetics or seen as a quick fix. But it’s so much more than that. Through the Reworlding Sessions, we explored how design can help us reimagine regenerative futures—a complex but urgent challenge for our times. Over six months, I have been part of this inspiring journey across Uganda, Brazil, the UK, and the Netherlands. Together with our partners, we held over 15 sessions over several weeks, creating space to explore, learn, and share ideas. 𝗠𝘆 𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗰𝘂𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗼𝗻: ✨ Developing a communication strategy to make the project’s impact clear and cohesive. ✨ Coordinating to ensure the visuals we created aligned with the overall narrative and focus. ✨ Designing and creating social media posts to share our story in a way that’s engaging and accessible. ✨ Extracting key learnings from each session and shaping them into an accessible story to share with a wider audience. This project reinforced for me how design can tackle big, complex ideas and make them easier to understand and engage with. It’s not about quick fixes—it’s about asking deeper questions and developing new mindsets. Through this journey, we have made thinking about regeneration more tangible for ourselves and the communities we design with. Take a look at the archive: reworldingsessions.com Let’s keep learning how to use design as a tool to make these futures more tangible and meaningful. Huge thanks to Dan Eames Thais Costa , Fisha K. , Merel van der Woude , and Hanne Österberg working on this together!

A thriving, healthy and circular city begins with an idea. Digital Innovation Challenges are open competitions supporting innovation and collaboration. They help test digital solutions that tackle important city challenges. Fishermans Bend is Australia’s largest urban renewal project covering approximately 480 hectares in the heart of Melbourne. By 2050 it will be a buzzing precinct, home to approximately 80,000 residents with around 80,000 workers. This urban renewal project provides an exciting opportunity to collaboratively explore how we can harness data and emerging technologies to enable our city spaces to thrive now and in the future. Following the success of the 2022 Challenge, and resulting Remix Raingardens pilot, we are inviting all eligible entrepreneurs, community groups, social enterprises, universities, researchers, start-ups, scale-ups and established organisations to submit their brave and brilliant ideas ready for piloting in Melbourne’s oldest innovation precinct. https://lnkd.in/gje6xiA5 #regenerativedevelopments #climatesmartliving #melbourneinnovationprecinct #fishermansbend #regenerativechallenge

Design Activism: Preserving Idealism and Fostering Purposeful Engagements At the heart of several design movements, such as Bauhaus, Memphis, or Droog, lies an impulse to rebel against established norms. During the period in which I studied design, our curiosity and idealism were shaped by conversations about how to utilize design to improve lives, disrupt unjust or exploitative practices in society, and preserve the joyful, playful, beautiful, and meaningful elements of the stories, rituals, and craftsmanship that have been carried forward by various communities for generations. I hope that my article will spark new comments and conversations. https://lnkd.in/gbUaZ3cR
