Remembrance Day: Lest we forget More than a century since its inception, Remembrance Day remains one of the most powerful communication campaigns the world has ever seen. Originally marking that moment in 1918 when – at the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month – the guns finally fell silent, marking the end of the First World War, Remembrance Day continues to grow in prominence as the years go on. Every November 11th people around the world fall silent in a shared moment of reflection. We honour the bravery and sacrifices of the men and women who serve and have served in the Armed Forces – of all nations –nowadays marking not just the end of WWI, but conflicts and wars since and up to the current day. This isn’t about jingoism, ‘victories’ or glorifying war – quite the opposite – it’s about the human sacrifices that are sometimes needed to ensure peace and stability. Here in the UK the Poppy Appeal, organised by the Royal British Legion, raises millions of pounds to support the Armed Forces community. But this campaign needs little promotion at all. A simple symbol - a red poppy - is pinned to shirts, jumpers and coats across the country, powerfully representing the field of red poppies that bloomed on the battle-scarred land of Flanders Fields, Belgium, immortalised in the famous poem written John McCrae. The simple symbol of a small flower, coupled with our shared minute of silence on Remembrance Day keeps the message of honour and respect for the soldiers alive every year. In PR, we aim to craft messages that stand the test of time and connect with people. With Remembrance Day, we are not only humbled, but also reminded that the most meaningful messages can, both metaphorically and literally, become pinned to the fabric of our society. Lest we forget. #RemembranceDay #PoppyAppeal #LestWeForget #RoyalBritishLegion #ArmedForces #Remembrance #VeteransDay #SacrificeAndService #WW1 #PoppyDay

Honoring Remembrance Day Today, November 11th, we pause to observe Remembrance Day, a significant day of reflection in Canada and around the world. This day is dedicated to honoring the sacrifices of military personnel who have served in conflicts past, with a special focus on World War I and World War II. At 11 a.m., we join together in a moment of silence, a tradition that began to mark the end of World War I in 1918. This observance serves as a reminder of the bravery, resilience, and commitment to freedom demonstrated by those who served. **Why Remembrance Day Matters** 1. Honoring Sacrifice: Remembrance Day transcends political divides, recognizing the courage of those who fought for peace and freedom, ensuring a safer world for future generations. 2. Promoting Understanding: Participating in Remembrance Day allows us to deepen our understanding of history, while appreciating values of courage and resilience central to our identity. 3. Reflecting on Peace: Beyond remembrance, this day encourages us to engage in conversations about the impacts of war and the ongoing importance of peace. **Ways to Observe Remembrance Day** • Wear a Poppy: A symbol of remembrance, wearing a poppy is a powerful gesture of solidarity with those who served. • Learn and Reflect: Take time to learn about our history and veterans' stories. Visiting places like the Okanagan Military Museum can be a meaningful way to deepen this knowledge. • Support Veterans: Consider donating to organizations that provide rehabilitation services and support for veterans and their families. This Remembrance Day, let’s each take a moment to honor the past, reflect on our present freedoms, and advocate for peace.

Calling all fellow Rotarians... I am happy to invite you to be part of the Rotary Peace on Earth 2030 game and ask that you share this invitation with your own Rotary club and fellow Rotarians as well. As you know, Rotary creates possibility through service. Serving humanity through Peace on Earth 2030 may be one of the most impactful decisions in this lifetime. The Peace Game meets folks wherever they are on their peace path - physically, emotionally, or spiritually - and inspires each and every player to take peace to an even higher level. A beautiful component of the game is the individual agency each player, from Afghanistan to Arkansas has to uplift peace in their own hearts, communities, organizations and the world. Being part of a collective action of people taking steps along the path inspires players to take a step each week on the path the peace. Peace on Earth by 2030 is real. The peaceful power of Rotary will only help bring about this reality sooner. Whether you wish to be part of this important movement individually, or form your own team, there is a place for you and anyone else you wish to invite. Of course, while this invitation is shared with you as a Rotarian, please feel free to share it within anyone who may be interested. A link to tomorrow's information meeting is in the comments. I participated in the last session. Please feel free to reach out to me with any questions. As always... Be gentle with you. Be gentle with all. Be the peace. #transformation #peacebuilding #poe2030 #peace #4truthheals

We don’t know them all but we owe them all - unknown This powerful quote is poignant, as its anonymous author mirrors the many unsung heroes of the D-Day landing 80 years ago today. Completed in 1862, Blacksod Lighthouse played a crucial, though often overlooked, role in the success of D-Day. Completed in 1862, Blacksod Lighthouse played a crucial, though often overlooked, role in the success of D-Day. A plaque on the lighthouse commemorates the significant impact of one lightkeeper who helped change the course of history. During my visit to Blacksod Lighthouse, I noticed that the structure bore little evidence of its historical significance apart from the commemorative plaque. I expected to find a museum celebrating its storied past, but instead, the windows were boarded up, and the place seemed forgotten. However, this was not always the case. From 1930 to 1950, Blacksod Lighthouse also served as a meteorological station. It was here that Lightkeeper Ted Sweeney unknowingly influenced the timing of the Allied invasion of Normandy. As D-Day approached, Sweeney was tasked with providing an hour-by-hour weather forecast. Initially, the invasion was scheduled for June 5, but unfavorable weather conditions made that date unsuitable. On June 4, Sweeney provided a forecast indicating clear weather for June 6. Based on his report, Allied commanders decided to proceed with the Normandy landing on that day, a decision that proved pivotal to the success of the biggest military operation in history. #dday #worldwar2 #france #normany #blacksodlighthouse #normany #europe
