Forget the squirrels, it’s the robins that are cunning I have a bit of an allotment at home where I grow veg. OK, it a big rhubarb production patch with some space for a few other veggies and cut flowers but it’s a place I enjoy working in. It’s beside a path so I can catch up with people wandering by as I take a break from digging or weeding. Every year, as soon as preparations for the growing season begin, my robin arrives. He perches nearby and waits for me to turn over the soil and expose some juicy worms to eat. I always think of him being the same robin. Ok I know that it won’t be the same robin who came when we moved in but during a season I see him as my robin. The robin. I know robins are territorial and will fight for feeding rights and that’s why I see him as my robin. But what if the robins are cunning? That they take turns and make us think they are all the same? It’s not a random thought experiment. I am thinking how often we approach things with a set of assumptions we don’t always even consider never mind challenge. We are hardwired to use our experience to solve problems quickly. It’s part of our survival mechanism that would protect us from sabre-toothed tigers. So next time you have something challenging, stop for a second and reflect on what ‘earned’ knowledge you are using. Is it valid for this situation? Think about the robin. Do I have evidence that it is the same robin or am I relying on knowledge earned elsewhere? Is that insight valid for this situation? Beware of the cunning robins… #bemorecurious
