If you care for pets on a stray hold, pre-adoption helps you make sure you're not missing out on interested adopters during the holding period. You might assume that only small, highly desirable dogs get pre-adopted, and they do! But Memphis Animal Services started pre-adoptions in 2019 and found that most of the dogs getting pre-adopted were actually medium dogs over 6 months old - the exact population most in need at their shelter. World Spay Day is 27 Feb - do you know that spaying and neutering can reduce the incidence of common cat and dog cancers? Neutered or spayed pets are also less aggressive, do less urine marking, and roam & fight less. 1. Why Spaying and Neutering Matters: Failing to spay and neuter dogs and cats contributes to millions of unwanted animals living without shelter, food, or care. It also leads to overcrowded shelters - there simply are just too many animals looking for homes. Puppies and kittens are cute - but they cost money to look after. A female having a litter of 2 to 10 pups is a huge financial responsibility. A responsibility the owner often doesn't want and shifts over to a shelter. Street Hearts BG is at full capacity and CLOSED for new admissions. Every week, we are inundated with requests to help dogs in need, often from locations far outside our catchment area of Dryanovo. We hate to turn these animals away, but we have no choice. When we explain our situation, we are sometimes met with rudeness and even abuse. Please understand, our shelter has a legal limit of 70 dogs. If we exceed this limit and face an inspection, we risk being shut down completely. That would mean no help for any dogs at all. Bulgaria is a large country with a massive street dog problem. Street Hearts BG is a small NGO doing everything we can, but we cannot carry this burden alone. Everyone must step up. Neutering dogs is one of the most effective ways to prevent unwanted litters. Despite offering a free neutering programme, last week we still ended up taking in yet another litter of dumped puppies. This is unacceptable. This is not just our responsibility. It is a collective issue that requires collective action. We must all commit to responsible pet ownership and take advantage of neutering programmes. If not, the suffering of dogs will continue, and we will never solve this problem. We implore you to be part of the solution. Ignoring this crisis and pushing the burden onto us is not the answer. Work with us, not against us, to create a better future for all dogs in Bulgaria. In case you missed the April 19th Dogs and Data call hosted by Shelter Animals Count and Pedigree Foundation, here are the key learnings for the first quarter of 2024: 🐶 Dog adoptions accounted for 53% of dog intakes in 2024, compared to 52% in 2019. 🐶 Dog return-to-owner outcomes have declined each year since 2019, from a high of 21% of total intakes in 2019 to 18% in 2024. 🐶 Dog transfer outcomes have decreased three percentage points, from 16% of total intakes to 13% of total intakes in 2024. 🐶 Dog non-live outcomes decreased from 9% of total intakes in 2019 to 6% of total intakes in 2021, and have been increasing since 2021, reaching the highest level in 2024, with 11% of total intakes resulting in a non-live outcome.
