🚆 The current 'boom and bust' cycle of rolling stock is a significant threat to the capability of UK train manufacturing. In July's Rail Director, Senior Technical Advisor David Clarke explains RIA's strategy for a lower cost, higher performing net zero railway, which proposes an affordable and deliverable solution to this problem - a plan of thirds. 🔹 Over one third of the network (38%) is already electrified.  🔹 One third (34%) of the network does not need to be electrified and can be decarbonised now with battery trains with lower life cycle costs. 🔹 The remaining third (28%) of the network needs to be electrified by 2050 to reach net zero. Now, of course, you need connectivity to the outside world for these Powercubes and I’m pleased to say that SICOM evaluated the options for GCRE’s very rural site which at first glance looked to be just Openreach. However, there are many things we can do with Openreach fibre and specialist Open Access Service Providers to create a flexible, adaptable connectivity infrastructure. This means that GCRE will benefit from 5 day lead-times to install internet access up to 1Gbps, direct links to UK and global Data Centres, low latency links to Cloud Service Providers and high bandwidth and dark fibre connections for the heavy users of data. SICOM can provide dark fibre and high bandwidth connections to nearly 4,000 rural postcodes in the UK. In many areas we can connect sites to city Data Centres and Tier1 carrier nodes for cost-effective 10Gbps and 100Gbps connections around the UK and world-wide. Think outside the box (or cube) and evaluate the best place for your Data Centre, but don’t forget to check your connectivity options first with SICOM.
