[PRESS RELEASE] Today we unveil the redesigned Konecranes Noell Straddle Carrier that helps container terminal operators manage the pace of energy change, inclusive of a modular power approach to support hybrid, battery and hydrogen power sources. They are interchangeable, and there is built-in readiness for future power sources as well, as container terminals strive to reach the ultimate goal of decarbonized operations. “There’s a package of benefits with the new redesigned straddle carrier. Its standardized design means we can deliver it faster, spare parts are more easily available, there’s less maintenance required and every unit is hydrogen-ready. But the main benefit is the modular approach that makes power upgrades easy. Operating on battery or hydrogen, the straddle carrier already has zero tailpipe emissions,” says Hubert Foltys, Director of Straddle Carriers, Port Cranes, Konecranes. As container terminals make the transition to low-carbon operations, they now have the flexibility to choose the straddle carrier power source most suitable for their changing needs, with no compromise in performance. Battery electric, self propelled rail car used to transport coal. As recently as 2022, freight railroads moved 3.4 million carloads of coal. (https://lnkd.in/gfXjCmfs) Before you have a knee-jerk reaction against coal, the ability of these electric rail cars to help the locomotive use less diesel is a great benefit, increased as the technology spreads to other rail car/product types. In 1997, I performed a design proof-of-concept for railcar manufacturer Trinity Industries, Inc., parametrically modeling a traditional hopper car (similar to the ones mentioned in this article) to determine how much corn or grain could be transported by various iterations of the design. https://lnkd.in/gUTRVuvx #electricrailcar #electricvehicle

In partnership with CPKC, CSX presented the first hydrogen-powered locomotive on April 16. More efficiency and zero emissions are the main benefits of using hydrogen as an alternative to fossil fuels, as it replaces all carbon output with water vapor. The engine was converted from an existing diesel locomotive using a conversion kit developed by CPKC, allowing the frame, cab, trucks, and additional parts, to be used with the new railway engine. As noted by Corey Davis, CSX alternative fuels and energy management director, reusing parts avoids introducing new carbon emissions into the environment. New Webinar: Building Minimum Viable Corridors for Hydrogen-Powered Trucking Thursday, April 18, 11am-12pm MT Canada has been struggling with accelerating the use of hydrogen in heavy trucking. Some useful pilots have been launched, but there is no clear, structured framework on how to move past pilots and get to an economically self-sustaining hydrogen value-chain for long-haul heavy-duty transportation. The Minimum Viable Corridor (MVC) framework was developed to show the transition pathway steps needed to deliver self-sustaining trucking corridors across Canada. The MVC model moves past a total cost of ownership approach, synthesizing the latest independent techno-economic analyses and validation from engagements with over 50 stakeholders along the full value chain to present a blueprint for advancing corridors to economic viability. The MVC provides a structured framework to align stakeholder interests, presenting the minimum conditions necessary for success and calibration of value chain elements like the required size of fuelling stations, options for number and types of trucks, distances travelled, cost and financing options, and more. Join us on April 18 for an introduction to this important framework.

Once more, CPKC is leading innovation in the hydrogen fuel cell-locomotive field. We've featured a number of stories about their real-world advancements over the past several months, and they've done it again. Under CPKC's Hydrogen Locomotive Program, and partnered with CSX, another North American freight rail company, CPKC's engineering team in Calgary, Alberta, developed a kit to convert CSX's diesel locomotives to hydrogen fuel cell power. Last week, CSX unveiled its first hydrogen fuel cell-locomotive emerging from this partnership - check out the video below ⬇, and you can read more about it here: https://lnkd.in/gRR-DJuT. The team at Change Energy assisted CPKC in securing funding from Emissions Reduction Alberta (ERA) for its Hydrogen Locomotive Program. In addition, prior to the existence of this program, Change Energy conceptualized in 2020 the conversion of a GP38-2 locomotive model in a study for Environment and Climate Change Canada, a model very similar to the one that CSX unveiled this week. The GP38-2 is a popular model used in yard switching and road switching service, with a duty cycle that is well-suited to the performance characteristics of compressed hydrogen fuel and fuel cell power modules, and has adequate space onboard for swapping out the diesel powertrain with a zero-emission, all-electric hydrogen substitute. Can tanker #shipping be decarbonised? Yes, it can! In the latest breakthrough for #shorepower in Europe, Swedish vessel operator TERNTANK and the Port of Gavle have successfully connected a tanker vessel to shoreside electricity using one of our shore power connection systems. The Tern Fors, a 15,000-dwt chemical tanker built in 2022, was connected for three hours to power its cargo pumps during unloading, and consumed a total of 1,424 kWh of energy. Speaking to Riviera Maritime Media Ltd, the vessel's chief engineer, Robert Friborg, said: "It was a completely magical feeling at the moment when we switched to shore power. It felt like we were experiencing something groundbreaking." Sweden has long been a shore power trailblazer, first installing the technology – also supplied by yours truly – at a passenger ferry berth at the Port of Gothenburg back in the 1980s. We've pioneered the introduction of ship- and shore-based shore power systems worldwide, including the world’s first such system for use with tanker vessels at the Port of Long Beach in 2009. Want to see how shore power could help decarbonise your operations? If so, set a course for: https://lnkd.in/eS9M_Aa #ports #maritime #porttechnology #onshorepowersupply #shoresideelectrification
