There are issues with adding a category 6 to a tropical cyclone scale. The biggest issue is that we don't have a data (or examples) to help differentiate between a category 5 and a category 6 storm. They're both categories where any well-built homes would be destroyed, and the only difference between categories are different wind speeds. I would also say that if we added a category 6, the public wouldn't pay attention to the lower categories. Most people don't realize that you don't need a category 6 (let alone a category 5) to be an incredibly devastating cyclone. 1900 Galveston Hurricane, 1928 Okeechobee Hurricane both reached category 4 and they're both the deadliest hurricanes in American history. More recent examples, Hurricane Katrina (rapidly weakened to category 3 before landfall), Hurricane/Superstorm Sandy (almost qualified as a hurricane when it devastated New York and New Jersey), and most recently Hurricane Harvey (category 4 becoming a tropical storm and brought record rainfall and record flooding across Houston).

Don't be lured into a false sense of security by a category one hurricane – storm surges and flooding mean they can still be incredibly dangerous. As Hurricane Ernesto – classed a category one – left 40% of Puerto Rico without power and caused flash flooding, scientists are cautioning that low-ranked hurricanes can be just as damaging as category five storms. Hurricanes are ranked from one to five on the Saffir-Simpson scale, with five being the most intense. The scale was developed back in the 1970s by a wind engineer and a meteorologist.
