🎙 Railway Industry Association (RIA) Chief Executive Darren Caplan joins us on the latest episode of the Rail Technology Magazine Podcast. 👀 Darren discusses the future of the UK’s rail industry under the new Labour Government, identifying a certain amount of continuity from the previous Government, including plans for continued devolution and the establishment of Great British Railways. 🚄 Darren also stresses the importance of targeting increased passenger numbers and revenue growth, despite a recommendation by the National Audit Office that the Department of Transport may have to dissuade people to travel by rail. 🗣 He also shows optimism for the future of the rail industry given positive global trends, and emphasises the crucial role that the sector has to play in achieving decarbonisation targets. As promised yesterday, here's that Big Interview we know many of you have been waiting for in as much anticipation as we have! Richard Bowker CBE and Nigel Harris ask Rail Minister Huw Merriman just about all the big questions we've been hearing these past months. They cover: * HS2 - the decision to cancel the line to Manchester, the facts about the project's rising costs, and whether Network North is a genuine alternative. *Industrial relations - asking the big question of "surely it's time that everybody started talking to each other?" * Fares and ticketing reform and simplification * Rail freight * Rolling stock * Decarbonisation * Rail Reform and the creation of Great British Railways - and crucially, whether anything is actually going to happen before the next General Election? It's a jam-packed hour of important questions. The Minister is engaging and genuinely interesting to listen to throughout. You're unlikely to agree with everything he says. We certainly didn't! But the three of us learnt a lot from it and we hope that you'll feel the same way. We also really want to hear what you think! So please do leave us a comment, either here, on X, or on YouTube. And here's the link to watch it: https://lnkd.in/eaSKd9fP #podcast #railways #departmentfortransport #railreform #hs2

Another enjoyable conversation - John Larkinson of the Office of Rail and Road (ORR). The ORR has been an important part of Britain's railway ecosystem for over 30 years. Its influence extends beyond the headline of Network Rail economic regulator and health & safety regulator for the rail sector. It has the opportunity to incentivise, to influence and to inform across across the country's strategic road and rail networks. Great to talk with John and so much conversation two bumper podcast episodes to enjoy. As ever please excuse "Goggin's estuary English"... #railwayindustry #rail #railways #railroad #transport #regulation #regulatoryinsights #wearesteer

Listen to #GBRTT lead Andrew Haines on the latest edition of the Green Signals Productions Ltd podcast. He's talking about the draft legislation to create a new, integrated rail body to bring track and train together and create a simpler, better railway for everyone in Britain. Here are a few of the key exchanges 👇 🚆Is the plan now for an integrated rail body instead of Great British Railways? No, they're the same thing. 🎯Is Network Rail going to be taking on franchising responsibilities? No, an NR takeover would be 'criminal'. #GBR will have a new culture driven by aligned, customer-focussed incentives. 🗳️Will the plan for an integrated rail body survive a general election? Yes, the status quo isn't a position anyone supports.
I'm a huge fan of podcasts, but more in the listening mode than as a contributor. However I broke my vow this week when I received the invitation to join the Green Signals Productions Ltd virtual sofa and discuss rail reform and, importantly, the recently published draft Rail Reform Bill. This was an opportunity I couldn't turn down. Understandably, many people have a lot of questions over the draft Bill, and hopefully during the course of this podcast you can see why I am so passionate about reforming our railways and the part that the Bill plays. Proper structural reform will unshackle the railway, end the fragmentation that exists and deliver a simpler, better and greener railway for Britain. The draft Bill and pre-legislative scrutiny maintains momentum, it keeps reform front and centre, gets the Bill oven ready and gives reassurance to our industry. I am hugely excited for the next chapter and I hope colleagues across the railway will share my enthusiasm. https://lnkd.in/edHk_U8f

#etcsrulez #highspeedEU What is the future of railways in Europe? A big question, answered from the perspetice of CER in below linked report. Again our friends at notebooklm help us to break it down into a podcast deep dive session that enables everyone to get the message quickly. Summary: This document, published by the Community of European Railway and Infrastructure Companies (#CER), outlines their vision for the future of railways in Europe. They argue that railways are the most sustainable and efficient form of transportation and can play a crucial role in Europe's green and digital transitions. The document emphasizes four key areas: ensuring fair competition between modes of transportation, adequate financing for railways, #digitalization of rail services, and a competition policy that supports the European green transition. It then provides specific policy proposals for each of these pillars. This document is intended to inspire EU policymakers to prioritize railways as a key element in achieving Europe’s sustainability and prosperity goals. Link: https://lnkd.in/d3mVnq2Z

Chief Executive Officer (CEO) at ÖBB Rail Cargo Group Prior: McKinsey Junior Partner I MIT PostDoc I Harvard Business School AMP
According to a representative survey conducted by the French market research institute Harris Interactive, 51% of Europeans oppose the introduction of mega trucks, while 84% believe that they will cause massive road damage and infrastructure costs. 🚚 ➡️ If the EU Weights & Dimensions Directive is adopted in its current form, rail freight will become even less attractive than road freight. What we need more than ever is fair competition that takes into account the external costs of CO2 emissions, road safety and the huge need to modernise road infrastructure. 🏁 The EU Council of Transport Ministers is due to take a final decision in mid-June. Please share this video, we need to change course now. Get all the details at: 👉 https://ow.ly/ixIM50RGSXx #RailFreightForward #RFF ÖBB Rail Cargo Group
