Relying on information provided by less experienced City staff at the counter can lead to costly mistakes. It’s best to consult senior staff or, even better, familiarize yourself with the relevant codes and interpretation manuals. If you don’t feel comfortable doing this, then hire someone with a ton of experience doing similar projects as you in the City.

This tragic incident in Baltimore will lead to change. The changes in size/capacity of vessels and the rapid development of technology, continuous assessment of failure and near miss scenarios must be employed to avoid incidents and improve readiness and response. This wreck removal and diving operation, in my opinion, will be very tricky, but it is not beyond the capability of the resources that are available or have been applied already. The metal structure and appurtenances of the collapsed bridge cannot be viewed as stabilized. And the various bridge components that may well be stuck or sunken into the mud will serve as further complications. Safety of the dive crews and expert safe rigging and lifting capabilities will be critical. And then there is weather, current and tide…
Just back from working at the ICP for the Key Bridge Collapse / MV Dali incident in the position of Deputy Environmental Unit Leader. Amazing work being performed by amazing people working as an integrated team. While this is certainly a disaster at the local, regional, and national level, the best people are out there working towards solutions. This I can attest to as having seen the operation first hand. Wishing them continued success in all of the phases of this operation.

It's your first day in your new role as Chief Surveyor. The phone rings, someone from the commercial team needs help preparing a bid on a full spread geophysical survey. Multibeam, sidescan, sub-bottom and magnetometer, not to mention USBL, etc, etc. They need an answer by the end of the day. Where do you start? How do you figure out which sensor is limiting your vessel speed? How to know your maximum altitude for magnetometer to ensure target detection? What line spacing and vessel speed allows you to meet accuracy and resolution needs for each sensor? What techniques do you use to manage acoustic interference? How do you tame this Acoustic Mayhem? If you want to take significant steps towards mastering these skills, then join my business partner, Christopher McHugh and myself in late October at the University of Delaware. We'll walk you through all of this, leaving no question unanswered.

Do you trust your surveyors’ reports? With so much to do, I'm sure you don't want to worry about your marine surveys and their reliability. But at the same time, I know that the Brazilian scenario of marine surveyors is crossed by a series of doubts, uncertainties and even suspicions. Having worked in port regions for so long, I can say that I've seen all kinds of problems caused by lack of transparency and honesty. All of this should worry you. Just as it bothered me for so long until I decided to take action and make RESPECT a turning point in this scenario. From where we are now, we know that our values must be incorruptible and that this integrity must guide all our actions and services. That's the direction I decided to take at RESPECT. One that we invite you to follow, confident that the destination will be as satisfying as the journey. Call the ones you can trust!
