Layering substrate in an aquarium involves creating different levels to enhance the aesthetic appeal and provide a suitable environment for aquatic plants. Follow these steps for effective substrate layering: 1. Base Layer: Start with a nutrient-rich base layer. Use nutrient substrate or specialized plant substrate to support plant growth. This layer typically consists of about 1 to 2 inches of substrate and serves as a source of essential nutrients for rooted plants. 2. Aesthetic Layer: Add a layer of fine-grained or decorative substrate on top of the base layer. This layer, usually about 1 inch thick, contributes to the visual appeal of the aquarium. Choose a substrate color and texture that complements the overall aquascape design. 3. Sloping Terrain: To create a natural look and a sense of depth, slope the substrate higher towards the back of the aquarium and gradually lower it towards the front. This helps in creating visually interesting landscapes and provides different planting areas. 4. Planting Area: Identify areas where you plan to plant rooted aquarium plants. Plant these directly into the nutrient-rich base layer, ensuring their roots have access to essential nutrients for optimal growth. 5. Sand Cap (Optional): If you want to use a finer substrate like sand, consider adding a thin layer (about 0.5 to 1 inch) on top of the planted areas. This acts as a cap, preventing the nutrient-rich substrate from mixing with the sand while providing a smooth surface for delicate plants. 6. Smooth Transition: Blend the substrate layers smoothly to create a seamless transition between them. This will result in a more natural and visually pleasing appearance. 7. Fill with Water Carefully: When filling the aquarium with water, use a plate or bowl to disperse the water gently. This minimizes disturbance to the substrate layers, preventing cloudiness. Layering substrate in this manner creates a visually appealing and functional environment for both aquatic plants and fish in your aquarium. #aquarium #aquascaping #aquatics #aquafeed #substrates

I love plants with big leaves. Nothing is more dramatic than enormous tropical foliage. One of the species we grow that always makes people stop and stare is Philodendron warszewiczii (war-zeh-wick-zee-eye), an amazing species, with incredibly lacy, divided leaves. One of the lesser-known Philodendrons, its individual leaves can reach 3-4' long and are held out from the trunk on long petioles. The trunk itself is amazingly thick, with a 6-10” diameter or even more in its native habitat. Being a terrestrial variety, it will ramble along the ground, but given the chance it will climb up a tree or rock. (They have climbed to the roof of our shade house on multiple poles!) As the plant ages, the emerging foliage becomes increasingly lacy, growing in beauty as it increases in size. Highly tropical, it will often drop most of its leaves during dry periods, regrowing them when the season is right. It does best in fertile, moist, well-drained soil and filtered light. Use it in the tropical landscape, in containers, or in brightly lit interiors. I love this plant for the texture and the ultimate size of it, and in mass it is just incredible. Ready now in 7-gallon pots. www.gardenind.com Instagram @mr_plant_man #plants #flowers #garden #landscape #nursery #tropical #landscapedesign #gardenlife #florida #plantsmakepeoplehappy #plantsofinstagram #flowersofinstagram #botanical #tropicalplants #monsteramonday #houseplants #houseplantsofinstagram #houseplantclub #foliage #aroids #aroidaddicts #philodendron #philodendronfriday #monstera #Philodendronwarszewiczii #nosmallplantshere #iloveplants

It's amazing how flowers seem to understand their purpose, whether they're in a carefully tended garden or just growing naturally in a forest. In the garden, people plant and care for them, ensuring they have just the right amount of water, sunlight, and nutrients. They thrive in this controlled environment, growing in neat rows, and adding beauty and fragrance to the space. But then there are those wildflowers in the forest or along the roadside. They don't get any special treatment. They just grow wherever their seeds land, in places where the soil might not be the best and the weather can be unpredictable. Despite this, they still bloom, often spreading across wide areas, painting the landscape with their vibrant colors. Both garden flowers and wildflowers have their own beauty and charm. Garden flowers are like well-kept secrets, carefully nurtured and appreciated up close. Wildflowers are like surprises, popping up unexpectedly and reminding us that nature has its own way of creating beauty. What's interesting is that they both play a role in their environments. Garden flowers can brighten up our homes and offer a peaceful space to relax. Wildflowers, on the other hand, support ecosystems by providing food for pollinators like bees and butterflies, and they can help prevent soil erosion. So, whether a flower grows in a garden or in the wild forest, it does its job. It brings beauty into the world, supports life, and reminds us that there's something special about letting things grow in their own way. #arte #artdeco #abstactart #abstractpainting #abstractflower #acrylicinkart #nature #growth #positivevibes #beauty #happinessisachoice #growthmindset #mindsetiseverything #life #wildflowers #garden #gratitude

A terrarium is a glass container containing soil and plants in an environment different from the surroundings. It is usually a sealable container that can be opened for maintenance or to access the plants inside; however, terraria can also be open to the atmosphere. Terraria are often kept as ornamental items. A closed terrarium's transparent walls allow heat and light to enter, creating a very favorable environment for plant growth. Heat entering the sealed container allows the creation of a small water cycle due to evaporating moisture from the soil and plants. The water vapor then condenses onto the walls of the container, eventually falling back onto the plants and soil below. Light passing through the transparent walls allows photosynthesis. Open terraria are not sealed and are better suited to plants requiring a more arid environment. . . Terrarium Work by Greentech International Co. . . . Tibouchina urvilleana is tropical and native to Brazil, also known as princess flower. Tibouchina is a broadleaf evergreen shrub or small ornamental tree that has large purple flowers and soft hairy leaves that are red around the edges. Tibouchina is very showy and adds a pop of color to any landscape. With the right growing conditions and climate; princess flower can produce blooms all year, especially if it is deadheaded to encourage the formation of more flower buds. Princess flower is commonly used in pots, for screening or borders and foundations, it's best to plant it in the spring. This shrub/ ornamental tree prefers fertile soil that is moist but well-drained, in a full sun to partial shade environment. Princess flower has a natural round or vase-shaped growth habit, and it is quite tall when mature; reaching 6-8 feet tall and wide. Tibouchina is a low maintenance plant when it comes to pruning. It is recommended to prune and remove dead or damaged branches. Pruning is usually done to maintain a rounded shape and or to train into an ornamental tree. Pruning for shape and to control its size is best performed immediately after the shrub finishes flowering. Pinching off new growth will encourage branch formation and create a fuller shrub.
