Yesterday, I had an interview that prompted a moment of introspection. When asked about my short-term and long-term goals, I reflected on advice from a committee member during my dissertation: “Life isn’t linear, Travis. It’s okay not to know everything. I wouldn’t be here if you did. Apply grace.” I shared this perspective in the interview, expressing that while life’s path isn’t always clear, my unique skills position me for various opportunities. I aim to work in an environment that fosters creativity, supports research, engages with community, and champions social justice. Although I felt uncertain about how I presented myself, especially in a space where my honesty might have seemed unconventional, I’m reminded of the saying: “If you want to make God laugh, tell them your plans.” Embracing life’s unpredictability, I trust that I am exactly where I need to be. It’s all about taking a deep breath and going for it. #CareerJourney #ProfessionalGrowth #EmbraceTheUncertainty #CreativityInTheWorkplace #SocialJustice #ResearchOpportunities #CareerAdvice #PersonalDevelopment
You are valuable, just as you are. ✨ But we don't hear that often enough, in said or unsaid ways, as we go through our careers. So we try to fit into boxes that don't fit us, like round pegs trying to fit into square holes. I was chatting with the current Rising Leaders cohort about this topic this week. The pressure to conform to and please those who have the power to hire us is real. But the question is if we need to change core elements of ourselves to work somewhere: - Will that ultimately be a place we will remain? - Will we find a career aligned with our values? - Will we feel empowered to bring our natural strengths to the table? Chances are no. And the toll it takes on us in the meantime is real and measurable. Some organizations will embrace you just as you are. They exist. I've seen them and been in them. Don't settle for mediocrity. ❤️ ___________________________________________ ♻ Repost to remind others 📨 DM to learn more about working together ➕ Follow me for more content like this

We love these pieces where we get to hear from CEO's and Directors. Regardless of industry, the questions Sallie Berkerey has answered could span across a variety of areas as she talks openly about the importance of team work, being supported from peers and skills needed to be a leader. As a CEO or Director in a firm, what would you say is a lesson you learned early on in your career?

Being noticed and leveraged for your thought leadership and expertise doesn’t happen by chance—it’s a combination of visibility, strategy, and your expertise. If you want to be recognized, you have to do more than deliver great work. You need to show up consistently and let people know why your work matters. I used to believe that if I worked hard enough, people would automatically notice the work that I was doing and the impact that it had. 𝘉𝘶𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵’𝘴 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘩𝘰𝘸 𝘪𝘵 𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘬𝘴. It wasn’t until I started speaking up in meetings, sharing my insights on LinkedIn, and building relationships with decision-makers that things began to shift. I went from being overlooked to being sought out for my thought leadership—and that changed everything for my career. If you’re ready to position yourself as the expert people turn to, here are three steps to get started: 🌱 𝗢𝘄𝗻 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗶𝘀𝗲: Be proud of the value you bring and the impact your make and confidently share it with others—whether in meetings, events, or online. 🌱 𝗦𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝗨𝗽 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗹𝘆: Speak up and contribute to discussions by sharing your insights, experiences, and unique perspectives. 🌱 𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗰 𝗥𝗲𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽𝘀: Connect with leaders, mentors, and peers who can amplify your expertise and open doors to opportunities. Becoming the go-to person in your field isn’t about waiting for recognition—it’s about positioning yourself for it. When you show up, speak up, and connect intentionally, you’ll find that the opportunities you’ve been waiting for will start coming to you. 💬 What’s one way you’ve shared your expertise recently? Let’s celebrate your wins in the comments! If you want a personalized strategy to position yourself as a recognized leader in your field, send me a message. I believe every woman of color leader deserves to be recognized for her expertise and the amazing work that she delivers.

Are you vying for that c-level position your company hired an outside search firm to fill? Securing that role for yourself will likely require a well-thought-out strategy. Credentials, skills, achievements, and years at the company won’t necessarily do you any favors. In order for you to land the role, you need to demonstrate how your vision aligns with the company’s future direction, and how you can drive transformative growth. You have an inside track, an insiders’ perspective and the external candidates do not know the culture and core values nearly as well as you do. To get a chance to step-up, SPEAK UP! Ask the company to include you in the process with the external executive search firm: if you have confidence in your candidacy, prove it. Want more excellent tips on how to set yourself up as the ideal candidate? Check out this article from Forbes’ Expert Coaches Council (which includes me)! Imagine if companies could gain deeper insights when hiring candidates for management positions by incorporating feedback from those who have directly experienced their leadership. What if employees who have been managed by these candidates were included as references in the selection process? Do you know of any company doing something similar? Would you receive positive references about your leadership?
