Introducing Temwa’s new project Strengthening Resilience For Vulnerable Households in Malawi (SRVH Project)! The project aims to improve resilience for 150 vulnerable households based in remote communities in northern Malawi most affected by the climate crisis. Target communities will be supported to form 5 new beekeeping and 5 new livestock-rearing cooperatives. These groups will all have 10-15 members each and comprise 60% women and 25% young people, ensuring equal access to resources. Earlier in the year we saw the progress of one of the beekeeping groups in Zulunkhuni. The group reported that current honey sales have allowed them to pay the secondary school fees for 6 children, contribute towards the local school feeding programme, purchase fertilisers for farming which supports households, buy work tools, and even construct a house under the Chief’s guidance. When we arrived at Amanzi Rural Village, there was no infrastructure, no hope, no food, and no money. The community was struggling to make ends meet. But with the installation of our Hydro Coop farm systems, everything changed—and it happened fast. In the space of just one day, we transformed barren land into a functioning farm. Our team worked around the clock, setting up everything needed to give the community a fresh start. The very next day, farming began, and within just 5 weeks, hundreds of fully grown chickens were ready for market. What was once a village without food or income is now a community with sustainable livelihoods and a clear path forward. The difference is undeniable. AidEnvironment, on behalf of the Ministry of Water and Environment (MWE) took the initiative to empower local people in bee keeping by training and supporting them with production technology and access to market. This is because their farming land reduced due gulley rehabilitation and riverbank restoration activities.  There is need to create harmony between man and the environment through training and supporting communities in alternative sustainable livelihood projects like beekeeping. The project intends to contribute to poverty alleviation and enhance environmental security. The project will help communities generate income through self employment, provision of honey, a much needed health food and medicine, and employment of other members of the local community. This reduces pressure on the environment as people become economically self-sufficient from income generating activity instead of encroaching on riverbanks for farming.

In flatter terrain, we build solar pump technology, and in regions with heavy rainfall, we now build rainwater harvesting systems to supply safe water. This is simple but revolutionary! 💧Today is World Water Day. For many of the communities Concern partners with across 25 countries, agriculture is crucial to their livelihoods – which means that water is everything. So when climate extremes – from severe drought to flash floods – impact water sources, it can have devastating effects on a community's food security and financial security. In Turkana County, #Kenya, where prolonged drought dried up water sources over the last four years, Concern addressed this issue through a drought response and resilience building intervention. The Turkwel River runs through Kangalita, a village in #Turkana County. While this should have been an advantage during seasons without rain, the community struggled when built up silt rendered the river useless for irrigation, as water could not flow to their farms. In 2022, Concern Worldwide met with the community and found that their priority was desilting the canal. Over the course of three months, with funding from the Center for Disaster Philanthropy, Concern financially supported community members as they desilted the canal, opening it up as a water source and providing water for irrigation to over 1,200 acres. Since this program, the community has continued the #desilting on their own, resulting in a sustainable water flow for the farm. With their #irrigation source, farmers in Kangalita can now harvest three to four times a year, whereas before they could only harvest once or twice a year. The town has also attracted more farmers. Hassan Olow, program director at Concern Worldwide Kenya, explained: "During production, people could see what was happening. There was an influx of 400 families. There is a reason to move there, it is worth it. There is now an opportunity to put further infrastructure into that community. We celebrated World Environment Day by conducting two awareness programmes in the mangrove area. #WorldEnvironmentDay2024 #awareness It is always thrilling experience to share wonders of nature and magics of mangroves to the participants. As one the mandate of our outreach activities, we (Wetland Management Service of Godrej and Boyce Manufacturing Company Limited) donate mangrove saplings so that we can contribute in restoration of the degraded lands . Our this activity is in well align with this year’s WED theme - land restoration, desertification and drought resilience. The land restoration is the key pillar of the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration (2021-2030). It describes an urgent action protection and revival of ecosystems all around the world, which is critical to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.
