International not-for-profit working to end the water, sanitation and hygiene crisis - for good.

About us

WaterAid is an international not-for-profit, determined to make clean water, decent toilets and good hygiene normal for everyone, everywhere within a generation. Since we started in 1981, we’ve remained resolutely focused on tackling these three essentials that transform people’s lives. Without all three, people can’t live dignified, healthy lives. With all three, they can break free from poverty, unleash their potential and change their lives for good. Children grow up healthy and strong, women and men start small businesses, whole communities start to thrive. It sounds normal and it should be. By inspiring people and sparking chain reactions we help deliver lasting change. By working closely with partners internationally and on the ground in some of the toughest places in the world, we have helped millions of people take control of their lives and build better futures. Now we are working to get safe water, decent toilets and good hygiene to everyone, everywhere by 2030. It’s about more than installing taps, toilets, boreholes and wells. To make lasting change happen on a massive scale, we pool knowledge and resources, link policy makers with people on the ground, change attitudes and behaviours, rally support from people and organisations around the world and convince governments to change laws. Together, we will change millions of lives for the better – and change normal for everyone, everywhere within a generation. We strive to be an excellent employer and invest in our people to maximise our impact. We provide a competitive benefits package and a tailored learning and development plan for all employees.

Discussions around climate change are heating up 🔥 They're even entering the medical field. Doctors are being urged to talk to their patients about how climate change can affect their health. But is this the right move? Climate change affects people's health in many ways, from exacerbating chronic illnesses to increasing the spread of infectious diseases. By talking about these threats, doctors can provide practical advice, like how to stay safe during extreme weather events. What do you think? Should doctors incorporate discussions about climate change into their patient care? How would you feel if your doctor brought up this topic during a visit? #ClimateChange #Healthcare #PublicHealth

Meet Julie! Julie joined us around a year and a half ago as our Advocacy Officer for all our climate and health campaigns. What’s been your proudest WaterAid moment?   “Attending the UN Water Conference and collaborating with young people to conduct some of our advocacy activities at Africa Climate Week and COP28 – organising events or creating content for our social channels. Feeling like my role plays even a small part within the wider change WaterAid is seeking, in collaboration with others, makes me proud.”   What keeps you committed to the mission at work?   “The wins across the federation! Change does not happen overnight. It’s a process. Every win, big or small, across the federation, gets us closer to achieving our goal to give access to clean water, decent toilets and good hygiene to everyone everywhere.”   What’s one valuable insight into the work you do that you’d like to share?   “Lately, politics and global developments have been challenging to say the least. It’s not always easy to navigate, to make sure our campaigns are relevant in all the contexts we work in, and not everything always goes to plan. But it’s exciting to think of alternative or imaginative ways to reach our ambition and to learn from colleagues around the world.”   And what’s your favourite song?   “Waterloo Sunset by The Kinks” 🎵 Keep an eye on our job openings for your chance to join our team and make a real impact 💧

What does your hair mean to you? This World Photography Day, we wanted to highlight this image from a powerful series of photos taken by Sianeh Kpukuyou that reveals how dirty water and poor hygiene can affect women’s hair and, in turn, their self-esteem. This could be from hair loss caused by contaminated water or carrying jerrycans on their heads, or even period taboos that prevent women from washing their hair while menstruating. Clean water can transform people’s health, hair and livelihoods. #WorldPhotographyDay #WorldPhotoDay #Photography #Water #Hairdressing #Ghana #CleanWater

“We will fail at killing the menace that is Mpox without clean water and good hygiene." The World Health Organization has declared Mpox a global health emergency. Irene Owusu-Poku urges leaders to prioritise these essentials in emergency response efforts to help stop the spread and protect vulnerable people, including women and children. Want to help spread the message? 👇 Share this post, or if you're in the UK, add your name to Vote Water at the link in comments. #Mpox #MpoxEmergency #VoteWater

What does water mean to you? To children, it means being able to stay healthy enough to go to school. For women, it means more time to do the things they love because they don't have to spend hours walking to their nearest water source. For healthcare workers, it means they can keep their equipment clean and look after their patients to the best of their ability. Water means life 💙
