We love hearing about new ways that hospitals use our solution, that we didn’t dream of when it was first developed.   The innovative work of the Clinical Documentation Integrity (#CDI) team at Northern Health, led by Mary Kouvas, is a great new case in point.   The team have used #Medtasker to automate CDI queries to directly impact the hospital’s financial performance.   Unanswered #CDIqueries cost #hospitals a lot more than just money, so when you operate an #acute #hospital with an average of over 850 open acute beds and over 110,000 acute admissions annually, you need to rely on the integrity of your #clinicaldata. On top of the hospitals not being exposed to months of delayed #reimbursements, using Medtasker has meant that employees don’t have to deal with ineffective paperwork and frustrating rework just to get the correct data into the hospital systems...   Within less than six months of using Medtasker for CDI queries, Northern Health exceeded a 90% response rate for electronic CDI requests. Interestingly, with Medtasker, the CDI process is not a change in workflow for #clinicians, rather improving it by putting the information in the palms of busy #JMOs in an app that they already use. Mary Kouvas, CDI Coordinator at @Northern Health, said the team were blown away on Day 1 of using Medtasker for CDI requests, by how quickly responses were processed and the visibility of queries being accepted and completed in real time. Prescribing spend is already a major NHS issue and I must have struck a chord here as this post has had over 4,000 views in 24hrs and 9,000 in a week. HSJ Online today reports an overall £1bn NHS overspend to date when the true figure is maybe 3-4 times that and hidden through the way NHS reports its finances. And all of a sudden, a hospital-dominated NHS has woken up to the significance of a prescribing driver within that total. As I have long predicted the reasons can be summarised in five points: 1. Primary care (ie FP10) prescribing is a significant element driving the overspend in ways not seen for many years (last time I can recall was the advent of QOF 20 years ago and its increase in LTC Rx) 2. The transition from CCGs to ICBs failed to maintain the internal systems that connect Rx budgets to the hand that moves the mouse or writes the script - especially now that prescribers are so varied and not just GPs 3. That is exacerbated by the disruption to historic relationships of meds optimisation teams and practices, the failure of the PCN scheme to include a direct focus on prescribing and the lack of attention to redesigning LES/LIS schemes over the past 18 months 4. Then we have poor reporting systems that fail to track prescribing and its costs in anything approaching real time tracking, and even those anachronistic schemes have fallen behind during the transition 5. Many ICBs had strategic eyes, as ever, on hospitals whilst forgetting that their #1 variable spend is the unglamorous world of primary care Rx, a large part of which isn't medicines but the even more obscure world of dressings and appliances. From NHS eyes, the above needs resolving fast - especially designing the right schemes to inform and incentivise the hands on the mouse. Let's talk about everyone's favorite topic: Hospital prices. There are some huge disparities in the prices hospitals charge that can’t be attributed to quality of care, according to a recent study from research institute RAND. “The wide variation in prices is notable, and addressing this variation could lead to substantial reductions in medical spending,” researchers wrote in the study. The American Hospital Association pushed back on the report, stating the analysis “represents less than 2% of overall hospital spending” and “offers a skewed and incomplete picture of hospital spending.” Read more: #hospitals #hospitalpricing #health #healthcare
