REGULATION (EU) 2024/568 OF THE EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT details the new government fees to be paid by applicants for #EuropeanMedicinesAgency services. It was published in February 2024 and will be applied from 1 January 2025. It implements significant increases not just for the known activities like granting and maintenance of Marketing Authorisations for #VeterinaryMedicinalProducts, but also implements fees for previously non-chargeable services. Read yourself and/or ask Argenta Munich how this will impact your financial plans - in many areas it is substantial. It is considered questionable if an increase like this will promote innovation and availability of veterinary medicinal products in Europe. As outlined at the #EMAVetInfoDay2024 last week on recently published guidances, this is rather another mal-incentive to innovators and researchers, as is the over-arching focus on risks as compared to the benefits of having registered products available in the markets. Obviously not in line with the objectives of #RegulationEC20196 to foster and encourage of Research, Innovation. 🚨 2018, I had completed my masters program in Veterinary Public Health and decided to go get a job after my applications to lecture faced many rejections. I prepared for my first corporate interview and was sure to ace it, t'was an agritech firm. I got the job, but not for the reasons I imagined. Some months later, my bos (during a monthly appraisal) finally gave me the reasons why he hired me. 1. I was the class representative (leader) of my class (Doctor of Veterinary Medicine) from 2008 till 2013. He had always admired and respected classreps who saw it till the end. To him, my 5 years on the role, my ability to achieve good distictions and also give a valedictory leadership speech during my oath taking was a strong testament of my leadership potentials. 2. I had mentioned my art background (never studied it, just started from cartoons and grew from there)... (I had also survived on proceeds from artwork from 2009 till 2018 when it finally turned into a hobby 😃). He requested to see some of my artworks and was impressed. He had been headhunting for a mentally focused and observant person, more like a perfectionist, for the role, which was to set the structure for one of the rising startups in Nigeria. He had identified these two key areas and would end up becoming a strong mentor who helped me shape them and gave me access to multiple opportunities to network better. Yesterday, I decided to retouch some of my old artworks, and it brought memories back to how art and leadership had always been major parts of how I got to where I am today. Once upon a time. I was good at writing (had written many stories and poems-never published), also, I had started drawing. Life happened and I found myself broke, I had to make a hard choice...as it seemed. Follow the passion that was going to pay me quickly and more often. I merged storytelling with arts and the rest is history. For those who wonder why I have artist on my profile headline...this is a part of me ma y are yet to see. The Ukrainian National Office for Intellectual Property and Innovations (UANIPIO) together with the Ministry of Economy of Ukraine, has developed a draft Procedure for Consideration of Requests for Supplementary Protection of Rights to Inventions. This procedure defines the process for granting supplementary protection for an invention whose object is an active pharmaceutical ingredient of a medicinal product, the process of obtaining or applying a medicinal product, an animal protection product, or a plant protection product, the introduction of which in Ukraine is granted by the relevant competent authority according to the current legislation of Ukraine. In preparing the proposals, the Law of Ukraine "On Protection of Rights to Inventions and Utility Models"; and relevant regulations of the European Union were taken into account, including Regulation (EC) No. 469/2009 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 6 May 2009 concerning the supplementary protection certificate for medicinal products (Codified version) and Regulation (EC) No. 1610/96 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 23 July 1996 concerning the creation of a supplementary protection certificate for plant protection products. Life-sciences giant Bayer is facing a U.S. antitrust lawsuit alleging anti-competitive practices related to tick and flea treatments. Tevra, a pet products company, claims Bayer colluded with retailers and distributors to hinder competition for generic tick and flea medication. Bayer denies wrongdoing but the case is proceeding to trial, scheduled for July. While the plaintiffs cannot pursue damages post-Bayer's exit from the animal health market in July 2020, the lawsuit seeks over $76 million in alleged lost profits. Tevra accuses Bayer of using exclusive deals to maintain dominance, resulting in inflated prices for consumers. Bayer argues its deals are short-term and other distribution channels were available for Tevra's products. The court expressed skepticism about Tevra's ability to prove the viability of alternative distribution channels at trial. Yesterday was a fantastic and insightful day at the HPRA’s Veterinary Information Day 2024. Here are some of the key takeaways I noted: 𝟭. 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗺𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗩𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗥𝗲𝗴𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 & 𝗦𝗣𝗖 𝗛𝗮𝗿𝗺𝗼𝗻𝗶𝘇𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 (𝗖𝗠𝗗𝘃) CMDv is actively working to simplify regulatory processes, reduce administrative burdens, and streamline SPC harmonization. HPRA provided clarification that for products not marketed the QRD update does not have to be completed by the due date of 29th January 2027. 𝟮. 𝗕𝗼𝗼𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗗𝗮𝘁𝗮 𝗤𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗨𝗻𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁 𝗗𝗮𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗮𝘀𝗲 (𝗨𝗣𝗗) To support VRNA processes, the HPRA have significantly improved UPD data quality, and MAHs are encouraged to verify their data ahead of the February 2025 sales data deadline. 𝟯. 𝗘𝗻𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗩𝗥𝗡𝗔 𝗦𝘂𝗯𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘀 VRNA grouping enables single-NCA decisions covering up to 2,000 changes. These simplify submissions and reduce rejection risks with best practices and process tips provided on the day. 𝟰. 𝗟𝗮𝗯𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 & 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗨𝗽𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀 VMD Guidance for Product Information Templates, Version 3.0, further streamlines joint labelling approvals in line with EMA QRD template Version 9.0 . The HPRA and VMD continue to coordinate for efficient, synchronized label finalization. 𝟱. 𝗔𝗱𝘃𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗣𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗰𝗼𝘃𝗶𝗴𝗶𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 & 𝗗𝗮𝘁𝗮 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆 P-SMEG's pilot is set to complete this year with a report currently being drafted. This aims to boost VMP safety and transparency through enhanced NCA-MAH collaboration. Final note: HPRA will be releasing their new website early in 2025!
