An article from Rancho Los Amigos National Rehabilitation Center’s (RLA) Occupational Therapy Stroke Team was recently published in the OT Practice Magazine (April 2024). The article focusses on the protocol the team has implemented to assess and address sensory deficits for stroke survivors. Stroke affects a significant number of people in the United States each year, leading to disabilities and sensory impairments. These impairments make it challenging for stroke survivors to perform everyday activities independently. Even if motor function is restored, sensory deficits can result in learned nonuse of the affected limb and reduced participation in activities. The Occupational Therapy at RLA uses assessments like the Nottingham Sensory Assessment and the Canadian Occupational Performance Measure to guide treatment plans. The center also utilizes the SENSe protocol, which focuses on retraining sensory discrimination abilities. Electrical stimulation with functional activity engagement is another intervention used to address sensory impairments. Rancho Los Amigos National Rehabilitation Center is committed to empowering stroke survivors and helping them regain sensation in their affected limb, enabling them to return to everyday activities. #rollwithrancho #ranchorehab #rehabiswhatwedo

When I was 25 years old, I graduated with my Master's Degree in Occupational Therapy, made to believe I was going out to do great things in the world. And I did, to some level. But what I also became was a servant to a deeply flawed system I had no way of fighting against. I went home every night having to convince myself that the one ounce of silver lining was enough to make a difference - but I couldn't turn a blind eye. So I set out on a mission to help people take action. To acknowledge the inevitable realities of their health outcomes that were coming for them if they didn't change their lives. To be proactive instead of reactive and to give them power back in their lives. To live not just longer, but better. I have spent the last 3 years developing a business centered around illumination. Because we cannot change what we cannot see. So I help shine the flashlight, point the direction, and guide others towards a path that is live-giving. To help people see what they've been avoiding. To present them with choices, rather than live in a place of defeat and take on the role of "victim" in their lives. And to support and encourage them as they make these tough changes. Because while what to do might be simple, doesn't make it easy. ❓ My question to you is: What is holding you back from living a more full and abundant life in regards to your health? What habits, mindsets, behaviors, or patterns do you recognize in your life that prevent you from having what you want to have or going where you want to go?

Increase your knowledge and skills in supporting adults living with cognitive deficits that impact occupational participation by participating in our online workshop- https://buff.ly/4aMyDBK Cognition is a functional domain that can be impacted by an injury, condition, disability, or significant changes in contextual demands. Cognitive difficulties can be difficult to navigate for occupational therapists due to the multi-factorial determinants of cognitive abilities. These difficulties, which can be modulated by contextual factors, can affect the occupational participation of clients, as expressed by the Canadian Model of Occupational Participation (CanMOP; Egan & Restall, 2022). As part of this workshop, a pre-recorded lecture (approximately 2 hours) will review principles, theories, and models of practice in cognitive rehabilitation. During the two-day live online portion, you will learn the principles of cognitive rehabilitation assessment and intervention strategies to increase occupational participation for adults experiencing deficits in meta-cognition, awareness, memory, attention, and executive functioning and have a chance to apply these strategies to case study examples. ➡️ Cognitive rehabilitation for occupational therapists: Level 1 📅 August 23 to September 6, 2024 (on your own) 📅 Fridays, September 6 & 13, 2024 from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (Eastern Time) Presented by occupational therapists Aman Ly & Aman Bains Save $50 when you register by May 8th!

I love being an Occupational Therapist! I chose OT because of its whole-person-centred focus and creative and practical approach to helping people with a variety of health challenges. Occupational Therapy (OT) is a HPCSA-registered rehabilitation healthcare profession (alongside others like physiotherapy) that requires a minimum qualification of an OT Honours' degree. Many OTs go on to complete Masters' and other post-graduate qualifications too. The name of our profession can be confusing because “occupation-al” implies we only have something to do with work or vocation! Actually, the reference is to all the meaningful activities which occupy the daily lives of human beings and which give us the sense of meaning and purpose we need to thrive. So, OT’s work with people of all ages with various health challenges to help them live better and do the daily activities they want and need to do – from self-care to work/study, socializing and leisure. Personally, I qualified almost 30 years ago (Wits 1996) and, although I have broad experience in adult psychiatry and adult physical rehabilitation, my current specific field of practice is pain management and supporting pain self-management. As an OT, I can assess every aspect of your health and life. I then train and support you in using all the evidence-backed, non-medication strategies that can become your daily habits for managing pain long-term. These are always personalised to suit your unique needs and preferences. #occupationaltherapists #occupationaltherapy #worldotday #wfot

🧑⚕️ Occupational therapy (OT) holds a dynamic role in various healthcare settings, particularly in aged care, disability support, and workplace injury rehabilitation. In aged care, OTs collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to enhance the quality of life for seniors by focusing on activities of daily living (ADLs), cognitive function, assistive equipment prescription and environmental and home modifications. For individuals living with disabilities, OT interventions are tailored to promote independence and participation in meaningful activities, improve independence with activities of daily living, assistive technology prescription, home modifications, working closely with physiotherapists, speech therapists, and other allied health professionals to address holistic needs. Furthermore, in the context of work injuries, OTs play a crucial role in facilitating safe return-to-work programs, employing strategies such as ergonomic assessments, job modifications, and adaptive equipment recommendations. Through teamwork and a client-centred approach, occupational therapy empowers individuals to overcome barriers and achieve their goals, fostering independence and improved quality of life 💙 #Alliedhealth #Physiotherapy #Occupationaltherapy #Podiatry #Speechpathology #Exercisephysiology #Homevisit #Telehealth #Sydney #Melbourne #Brisbane
