NAIDOC Week 2024 (7-14 July), with the theme 'Keep the Fire Burning! Blak, Loud and Proud,' celebrates the resilience and spirit of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. For me, this week is more than just a celebration—it's a personal mission. As I look forward to my trip to the Northern Territory, I'm reminded of how important it is to immerse myself in these rich cultures. I'm continuing with my commitments to better understand, better connect, and take a stand so we continue to move forward: 𝐃𝐞𝐞𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐦𝐲 𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰𝐥𝐞𝐝𝐠𝐞: I am continuing to educate myself about First Nations histories and contemporary issues. I'm watching The Last Daughter, a documentary feature film about Brenda's journey to uncover the truth about her past and reconcile the two sides of her family. 𝐇𝐚𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐦𝐞𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐟𝐮𝐥 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬: Continue to embrace the hard conversations and remain active in discussions about reconciliation and support for First Nations people. The Kleinfelder team took time to acknowledge NAIDOC week and the importance of celebrating the history, culture, and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. The team participated in events to learn more about First Nations culture, investigated and presented ways to promote and foster increased Indigenous participation in our industry, and incorporated conscious supply changes to our business. All with the aim of learning how to be the best ally we can be.   This NAIDOC week we at Kleinfelder continue to make conscious focused changes and challenge ourselves to learn and do more; for we believe even today’s smaller deliberate changes can become the instinctive strides forward of tomorrow. #NAIDOC2024

Blak, Loud and Proud," ignites a powerful message of resilience and pride. The burning fire symbolises the enduring strength and vitality of Indigenous cultures, passed down through generations. It represents connection to the land, community, and the rich traditions that define First Nations identities. "Blak, Loud and Proud" embodies the unapologetic celebration of Indigenous heritage, empowering them to stand tall and share their stories with the world. NAIDOC Week NAIDOC South Australia is a time to celebrate the histories, cultures achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.   It gives First Nations people and non-Indigenous people the opportunity to celebrate and connect with community and Country. And proud Samuawgadhalgal, Torres Strait artist Deb Belyea is the winner of this year's NAIDOC Week poster competition – here is what Deb says of the winning work, Urapun Muy. “‘Urapun Muy’, from the Kalaw Kawaw Ya dialect of the Top Western Islands of the Torres Strait, means ‘One Fire’. The title of this work pays homage to Torres Strait Islanders and Aboriginal people everywhere, as we all have that one fire; our passion for our culture.   In this work, I have depicted the hands of our ancestors that have carefully dropped a burning ember on to a fire. This ember burns hot with intensity, stoking the flames, as it combines with the new fire. The linear detail shows the energy and power as cultural knowledge is transferred from our ancestors to us today. Culture is the fire that gives us knowledge, wisdom and purpose. It is our responsibility to maintain, practice, and pass on our fire to our future generations. After all, Culture keeps us Blak, Loud and Proud.”   At #AscottAustralia, we are committed to listening more, learning more, and forming more partnerships that will support First Nations communities in meaningful ways. As Australia celebrates NAIDOC Week from Sun 7 – Sun 14 July, let’s take a moment to appreciate the profound history, dynamic culture, and significant accomplishments of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. One brilliant example is the 2024 Senior Australian of the Year, Yalmay Yunupiŋu. A teacher and linguist from north-east Arnhem Land, Yalmay has been recognised for her teaching excellence and her efforts to promote cultural language by translating Dr Seuss’s books into her native Yolŋu Matha language. She is among the many Indigenous trailblazers making a real difference in her community. NAIDOC Week 2024 This year’s theme is ‘Keep the fire burning! Blak, loud and proud’ honouring the enduring strength and vitality of First Nations culture. The organisers explain that this theme was designed to honour the “enduring strength and vitality of First Nations culture — with fire a symbol of connection to Country, to each other, and to the rich tapestry of traditions that define Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples”. Why do we celebrate? The origins of NAIDOC Week can be traced back to 1920. What began as a day of protest has transformed into a week-long festivity that honours First Nation’s culture and history. The term NAIDOC stands for National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee. To heal the Nation The truth is Australia does not take enough pride in our Indigenous history, especially when Indigenous Australians represent the world’s oldest continuing culture. Now, more than ever, especially in the wake of the failed 2023 referendum to enshrine an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice to Parliament, we need to take radical action to uplift our fellow Indigenous Australians. As Muslims residing in Australia, we too are “settlers” on this land. Our community spans numerous multicultural groups, and many of us can relate to the distress of colonisation. Our nation is enriched by amplifying Indigenous voices, engaging with traditions, and telling their stories. NIDA seeks to educate and inspire our community as we nurture the next generation of creative storytellers. "First Nations people understand that fire can burn in different ways: cool or hot. When we express ourselves proudly, we ensure our voices are heard. If we suppress our expressions, anger can build up like the fuel loads on unmanaged country, leading to a destructive, hot fire. A hot fire, like unchecked anger, can be blind to its surroundings, unwittingly destroying everything in its path and hindering future growth. On the other hand, a cool fire burns gently, sees where it’s going and is welcomed by its surroundings. It cleanses and clears obstacles, nurturing an environment where future generations can thrive.
