The Five Million Girls project, a testament to our commitment, is not just about education; it's about culturally relevant stories and narratives integrated into a project to engage and inspire girls. Like a compass, these stories challenge existing norms and provide alternative perspectives that encourage critical thinking. They empower girls to imagine a different future where societal expectations do not limit them. The project's mentoring component, a lifeline, is critical to empowering girls. Girls, like seeds, are matched with female role models from various sectors who provide guidance, support, and real-life examples of success. Like nurturing soil, these mentors reinforce the narratives in the literature and foster a supportive community for the girls, helping them navigate the challenges they face and realize their full potential. Shaping Futures: How We Can Collectively Empower Girl Children Girl children are brimming with potential, yet they often face societal barriers that hinder their growth. Mentorship and a supportive environment are crucial in shaping their confidence and paving the way for a bright future. Here's how we can work together to empower them. Mentoring Matters: Mentors act as role models and guides, offering invaluable support and encouragement. This can come from anyone – older siblings, teachers, community leaders, or even working professionals. Mentors can help girls develop essential life skills, build self-esteem, and navigate challenges. Building a Supportive Society: Beyond individual mentors, entire communities play a role in nurturing girls. Schools can create safe spaces, offer diverse extracurricular activities, and promote gender equality within their curriculum. Media representation should portray strong female role models, and communities can organize workshops and events that celebrate girls' achievements. Expanding the Support Network: Parents are a girl's first teachers, but the village truly raises a child. Stakeholders beyond parents include healthcare professionals who can address girls' specific health needs and concerns. Religious leaders can promote messages of equality and respect. Social workers can identify vulnerable girls and connect them with appropriate resources. By working together, mentors, communities, and dedicated stakeholders can create a nurturing environment where every girl child feels empowered to reach her full potential. This collaborative effort paves the way for a brighter future where girls become confident leaders, active participants in society, and future changemakers. Women for Greater Good Foundation is at the forefront of this movement. Through our mentorship programs, educational workshops, and leadership training initiatives, we empower girls to reach their full potential. We collaborate with schools and community organizations to create safe spaces for girls to learn, grow, and thrive. However, we can't do this alone. We are actively seeking partners, volunteers, and donors to support our work. Here at NNL, #InvestInWomen also means investing in girls. We have joined up with the Girls Out Loud organisation, who run mentoring programmes for teenage girls. Two of our colleagues are participating in their ‘Big Sister’ programme at a local high school. Teenage years are becoming more demanding, and in recognition of this, the ‘Big Sister’ programme targets the middle girls, who share a propensity to underperform. Mentoring pairs of women and Year 9 girls are matched for the whole school year, with regular sessions to support their journeys. Results from previous cohorts include: ·        90% of girls on target to achieve 3 levels of improvement in attainment ·        no pregnancies ·        no anti-social behaviour ·        over 90% of girls setting their sights on further education or vocational training One of the girls wrote: “It’s great to have someone on my side to prove to me I am someone.” Mary Erlund, Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Manager for NNL said: “Girls Out Loud is a fantastic organisation that is making a dramatic difference to individual lives. "Youth culture refers to the cultural practice of youth by which they express their identities and demonstrate their sense of belonging to a particular group of young people." In last week's mini-workshop, Jennelle Ramdeen talked about the importance of honoring youth culture in youth programming. Jennelle shared four specific ways that youth programs tend to stifle youth culture: 1. Using a program to promote the internalization of dominant culture 2. Tokenizing 'the Best' 3. Funder demands 4. Creating Inclusive Spaces Online Those of us born in the 1900s were not raised in this age of social media and if we are building international school communities of inclusivity and belonging through the lens of DEIJB, we have to have the discussion of our students' online presence. Who are the children online? What are they saying? Who are they talking to? Who or what is influencing them? Are they using social media to exclude? Recently, I've had conversations with students about their digital footprint and how what they do and say online not only has impact today, and can have impact well beyond today. "Good children make bad decisions, even yours." I appreciate this from Titania Jordan of Bark for coming in to teach our parents on digital citizenship and protecting our children as they develop in these times. Recognising ways to encourage for more women into skilled trades, Winston Churchill Trust (Australia) Fellowship, I met with Divérs - Lige muligheder for alle International Relations Project Leader on the #BossLadies initiative Duygu Cakir for some more lightbulb moments. Denmark has seen 106% increase in female participation across 1 Vocational School in the past 4 years after #BossLadiesFGU was involved in addressing the Vocational Education gender segregation. They also work with over 33 Vocational Education Schools across the country. Duygu Cakir discussed the research completed to establish best communication techniques in encouraging women into skilled trades. Women want to be seen #onthetools rather than posing next to them. #BossLadies has screened and inducted 473 Female Ambassadors as Facilitators of their #GirlsGarage programs run 8 times per year for young women between the ages of 12 to 15 (years 6-9). #BossLadies also offer a hotline (phone call for advise) as an option for Employers who are worried about women’s boundaries or having women onsite, to address any questions or concerns.

What is your favorite topic to cover in your Chrysalis After-School group? "My favorite topic to cover in Chrysalis After-School is personal empowerment." What do you wish people knew about the girls you work with? "I wish more people knew that the girls in Chrysalis After-School are so incredibly resilient and have so much to offer this world." What is your Chrysalis After-School Facilitator superpower? "My superpower is providing each girl with the sense of belonging." What is the most important thing for girls to have when they leave Chrysalis After-School? "All girls that participate in the Chrysalis After-School program leave with a greater Self-Awareness."
