Brightbeam CEO, Chris "Citizen" Stewart and Ismael Jimenez, Director of Social Studies Curriculum for the School District of Philadelphia, explore the importance of high-quality curriculum in education. The conversation covers the issue of teachers sourcing curriculum from unreliable websites and the need for better quality control. The role of parents in monitoring curriculum and engaging in conversations with teachers is emphasized. Chris and Ismael also highlight problems with bad curriculum, such as the lack of guidance or reliance on biased perspectives. Humanizing education and focusing on pedagogical skills are identified as key factors in improving curriculum quality. The conversation delves into the importance of effective teaching, the need for teacher support and professional development, and the challenges of curriculum and "indoctrination." https://lnkd.in/eKWSCGat

Today I was fortunate to share in the facilitation of Catholic Schools Broken Bay's Staff Development Day on Curriculum Reform, with a particular focus on the common grade scale and consistent application of grades. Leading a group of professionals in moderation activities and facilitating discussion around big ideas for assessment, teaching and learning were just some of the highlights of the day. #teaching #education #assessment #educationalleadership

Here's a great strategy for #teacher and #schoolleaderwellbeing = high quality professional learning. Here is #JamesRusso modelling a Maths lesson with a class of students, being observed by teachers and curriculum leaders of #BrisbaneCatholicEducation. This is a strategy for well-being as it motivates, encourages and energizes teachers. They will take this enthusiasm back to their schools and inspire colleagues to provide high quality teaching. That is great for professional well-being. We need more strategies for well-being, NOT well-being strategies. Well done #BrisbaneCatholicEducation #TeacherWellBeing #TeacherProfessionaDevelopment #PrimarySchoolTeachers

Convinced that every class in a Catholic school should be taught from a Catholic worldview? Need resources, ideas, staff buy-in, or just a place to start? #MakingEveryClassCatholic is what I do! Let's get started.
One of the most common questions I get in this work is about how integrating Catholic faith across the curriculum works differently in elementary and in high school settings. What question would you like to see me address next?

Culturally responsive Pedagogy has been a hot topic since the beginning of the pandemic. However, what exactly is it and where did it come from? Culturally Responsive Pedagogy derives from a framework by scholar Gloria Ladson Billings in which she explains the three criteria for being culturally responsive. According to an article by Edweek “Culturally responsive pedagogy is a practice that involves using students’ customs, characteristics, experience, and perspectives as tools for better classroom instruction.” Students bring prior experiences and perceptions into the school building that affect their interaction with the school building itself, as well as who populate it throughout the day. This is consistent with Ladson Billings’ first part of her characteristics of what culturally responsive pedagogy is. Zaretta Hammond talks about what is going on in the body and mind of a student as they navigate through the school building in her book “Culturally Responsive Teaching and the Brain”. The practices outlined in her book also extend to all stakeholders in the school building. We must not only be conscious of the cultural differences in others but also in ourselves and how we navigate through different experiences in and out of the classroom. Drop in the comments if you are part of a culturally responsive school. #culturallyresponsive #curriculumdevelopment #educationalconsultant #educationalconsulting #professionaldevelopmentforteachers #professionaldevelopment

📢 Agora 2024-1 'Teaching the Capabilities through History' is now available online. The latest edition explores the central role of History in teaching the curriculum’s capabilities. The four capabilities outlined in the Victorian Curriculum Foundation–10 are critical and creative thinking, ethical, intercultural, and personal and social. History provides ample scope for teachers to incorporate these capabilities into their practice so that students can learn to: 🔸 critically evaluate competing claims 🔸weigh up the legitimacy of sources 🔸understand the perspectives of people from different cultures 🔸hold respectful discussions with those who have opposing viewpoints 🔸develop personal and social skills such as resilience 🔸underpin these capabilities within an ethical framework. While these capabilities are embedded across the entire school curriculum, this edition of Agora provides practical advice for how teachers can use History to embed the capabilities into their practice. 🔗 HTAV Members, click here to access the latest edition of Agora: https://lnkd.in/gRiPdV6X #students #student #teacher #teachers #teaching #TeacherLife #learning #learninganddevelopment #professionaldevelopment #school #schools #education #educational #educators #classroom #independentschools #classroom #history #schoolleaders #pedagogy #content
