Col. John Boyd, a former US Air Force pilot, is a man whom I've never met, but wish I had. Although for many he's simply "the OODA loop guy", there is so much more to his legacy that is well worth exploring, grappling with, and ultimately, applying. His extensive contribution to military and business strategy, aircraft design and philosophy will shape minds for many years to come. As we immerse ourselves in the excitement of SB LV III (58) and finalize preparations for the upcoming party, ensuring everything is perfect for our guests, I took a moment to reflect on the legacy I'm leaving behind. A recent conversation with my former Senior Enlisted Advisor and friend, Mark Rizzo, Ed. D., sparked insightful and enjoyable discussions, even if a bit heated at times. Recognizing the concept of legacy goes beyond immediate tasks, I pondered the values, principles, and positive influence we impart on those around us. Legacy isn't just about efficiently handling short-term challenges; it's about creating a lasting, positive impression that contributes to the betterment of individuals and the community. Consider the distinction between being remembered for tackling tasks and being someone who, through intentional actions, inspires others to thrive and make a positive impact. Prioritizing self-awareness and balance allows for a more intentional focus on actions aligned with a deeper sense of purpose and values. Consciously building a legacy rooted in compassion, empathy, and meaningful connections goes beyond completing tasks; it leaves an enduring imprint. The pursuit of the best version of oneself involves personal growth and a commitment to positively shaping the lives of others. How To Live Forever We all want to make a difference and be remembered for our contributions to the world and our job. What drives most of us is the desire to leave a legacy. What is a legacy? Legacy is your stamp on the future. It’s a way to make some meaning of our existence. People consider their legacy to be real estate, assets or money. But the most treasured forms of legacy are found in intangible gifts: values, memories, friendship, love, and respect. A legacy encompasses your life and the lessons learned, it celebrates things most important to you, such as a cause or an interest. Having a legacy means that you share these causes or interests with friends, family, and posterity. To leave a legacy means you will continue to make a contribution, help generations know and implement the lessons you learnt and the impact you created. Shannon L. Alder said, “Carve your name on hearts, not tombstones. A legacy is etched into the minds of others and the stories they share about you.” Be honest and ask yourself, what legacy you’re going to leave here and now? What did I do at my workplace that everyone remembers me? Do what you love to do, what you are passionate about, what you are expert at doing and then share your expertise, share your love, share your laugh and finally on day you can see you leave your legacy.
