🌾 Anticipating Ukraine’s accession to the EU, with its vast farmland and even greater challenges, the relevant EU institutions are already thinking about the difficult task of future cooperation. 🌾 Meanwhile, we will have to transform our agricultural sector and change our agricultural policy in line with the EU’s Common Agricultural Policy and the European Green Deal, develop a national agricultural development plan, coordinate our activities with European institutions, and reach an understanding with neighbouring countries. 🌾 In particular, we need to convince our immediate neighbours that Ukraine’s accession to the EU and cooperation in developing green and inclusive agricultural policy will benefit us all. 🌊 OceanCare’s Fabienne McLellan had the pleasure of delivering the keynote presentation on the BBNJ Agreement and subsequently joined a panel to further discuss the importance and impact of the Agreement during the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs’ stakeholder event on the environmental chapter of the maritime strategy held in Bern this week. On June 2, 2023, the Federal Council adopted a maritime strategy designed to streamline federal policy on issues in this area. This step is especially important for Switzerland, given its diverse interests and commitments in maritime affairs. OceanCare has followed the #BBNJAgreement negotiations from the very beginning, nearly 20 years ago when the UN first discussed the conservation of marine biodiversity in areas beyond national jurisdiction. Throughout these negotiations, #Switzerland has shown itself to be an ambitious and constructive voice. As a result, other countries are closely watching Switzerland’s progress in ratifying the BBNJ Agreement, a further reason for why we urge Switzerland to sign and ratify the Agreement as soon as possible. 🌍 The format of this stakeholder event, which included participants from government, academia, civil society and the private sector has provided an excellent platform for meaningful discussion and insights on the once-in-a-generation #BBNJ Agreement, as well as deep-sea-mining. 🤝 #OneOceanOnePlanet #HighSeas #HighSeasAlliance #MaritimeStrategy #SDG14

The Atlantic Ocean connects and sustains us like never before. More commercial and shipping traffic crosses the Atlantic than any other ocean. More data travels along its underwater cables than any other ocean. It is home to more than half of the world’s fisheries. Recognizing the Atlantic’s importance to our lives and our collective future, the United States joined three dozen countries on the margins of the United Nations General Assembly in September 2023 to launch the Partnership for Atlantic Cooperation. An unprecedented number of coastal Atlantic countries across Africa, Europe, North America, South America, and the Caribbean have come together to tackle shared challenges and uphold a set of shared principles. On the eve of the Immersed in Change ocean conference, the governments of Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, and Panama gathered in San José, Costa Rica, to recognize the 20th anniversary of the creation of the Eastern Tropical Pacific Marine Corridor – referred to as CMAR. Ministers from all four countries reflected on the progress made over the last two decades for a regional mechanism of cooperation for the conservation and sustainable use of marine biodiversity, including action for a legally binding agreement for CMAR, progress to establish a transboundary durable financing mechanism, monitoring and enforcement, and planning the path forward for the next ten years. “We are building links and a binding peace with nature. Taking care of this hotspot of biodiversity is a responsibility, and for this we need technical and practical governance, and consolidation of a binding legal agreement” shared Susana Muhamad, Minister of Environment and Sustainable Development, Government of Colombia. Recognizing that cooperative leadership and working in partnership is crucial to secure sustainable financing and deliver a healthy ocean, the Connect to Protect Eastern Tropical Pacific Coalition provides technical and financial assistance in support of a regional governance structure, design and implementation of MPAs and the biosphere reserve, and securing sustainable financing. The coalition works with elected leaders, communities, Indigenous groups, government officials, and scientists. When organisations are true to their values, mission and are purposeful in what they do, they tend to gravitate towards each other. SouthSouthNorth (SSN) joins as the 34th Charter Member of the Global Landscapes Forum (GLF) the first in Africa. The GLF and SSN will support local actors in leveraging the region’s unique opportunity to lead the world in tackling the global environmental crisis. This is what Dr Shehnaaz Moosa, SSN Director said during the launch. “As an organization based in the Global South, one of our biggest challenges is how to redress the huge injustices and inequalities that were not caused by us, and how we do it in an equitable and fair way that includes a whole-of-society approach. From a decolonial perspective, South-South cooperation emphasizes the value of locally-led action and challenges existing power imbalances in global development by prioritizing the needs, voices, and knowledge systems of diverse actors and communities in the Global South”.
