Eric Johnston's editorial today in The Australian about Australia's #foodmanufacturing opportunity is spot on. Well worth the read, Eric states: "In the endless chase for critical minerals or renewables, we are taking for granted an industry that is already creating wealth. "Remember, food manufacturing is manufacturing. It is #sophisticated, #techintensive, serving markets where tastes are always evolving and it is #addingvalue. "Food manufacturing in Australia has scale and it is brimming with potential. AMGC agrees with the journalist that: "there is a chance to become the superpower of food. But there is just a tiny window of opportunity to get things right." The story includes insights from Bubs Australia (ASX : BUB), Noumi and Bega Group on how to unlock growth. While the article is behind a paywall, the story is also featured in print from on page 15 and 18 of the paper today. https://lnkd.in/gZa8dErD #Australianmanufacturing #australianmanufacturers Department of Industry, Science and Resources

What is agri-food chain fairness? Tomorrow we will address this crucial point with key agri-food system actors committed to support the sustainability of our agri-food chains' actors, from farmers, processors, retailers, to consumers. Special thanks to Forno Brisa, Molini Popolari Riuniti, Prometeo Farro, Fairtrade International, Conserve Italia, Camilla, Eurocompany, Orogel S.p.A. Research findings confirm that fairness encompasses various dimensions: - Distributive Fairness: Fairness in the ratio of inputs to outputs. - Procedural Fairness: Fairness in agreements, negotiations, and power balance. - Interactional Fairness: Fairness in honesty, respect, and quality of information Thus, key fairness-oriented practices include: - Banning unfair trading practices - Increasing price transparency - Building trust and long-term contracts - Ethical treatment of farmers The event is part of the project GOURMED, a pioneering research project on agri-food system governance, business models, value chains, and consumer food choices, all with a focus on fairness, funded by PRIMA Programme of the European Union. #AgriFood #Fairness #Sustainability #GourMed #Research #ValueChain #BusinessModel #ConsumerChoice #Farmers #FairTrade

We committed ourselves to #reducing #foodwaste in our own operations by 50 percent by 2025. Our approach is based on five pillars: 1️⃣ Supply Chain / Upstream > we tackle the challenge from farm to fork, working with our suppliers and beyond, in our industry, while monitoring and sharing best practice. 2️⃣ Food Waste Reporting > we set ambitious targets and objectives publicly. We monitor, manage and report on targets using credible standards such as the FLW protocol. We continuously focus on improving data availability and quality, to make data driven decisions. 3️⃣ Food Waste Solutions > We explore and utilize the latest technology solutions to help us achieve our food waste targets and objectives. 4️⃣ Customers and partners > We support and encourage our customers and partners to use solutions that save resources and costs and do good in society at the same time. 5️⃣ Stakeholder Engagement > We actively seek, foster and promote dialogue & partnerships across the entire wholesale value chain to influence on matters exceeding company borders. We have just recently extended our long-lasting collaboration with the Tafel Deutschland e.V. (food bank) movement to provide people in need with food that is still of impeccable quality despite an approaching best-before date. We are also steadily expanding the collaboration on an international scale and partner with the European Federation of Food Banks (FEBA) (Fédération Européenne des Banques Alimentaires, FEBA). #METROfact #LetsDoThis #ESG #sdg2 #sdg12 #sdg17

The Impact Weighted Accounts framework aims to quantify companies' environmental and social impacts. This is a great idea in theory, but in practice can be very misleading. Milarex sources salmon from Norway, processes it in Poland (predominately to smoked or marinated salmon) and distributes to retail chains in Europe and the US. In 2022 it had sales of €387m, but additional positive impact of €588m. p46 of the attached states that "Most of this impact is driven by the averted healthcare costs for Milarex consumers receiving health benefits from the effectiveness category through consumption of Omega-3s and other nutrients found in Milarex’s products (e.g., lower risk of breast cancer and cardiovascular episodes), as well as from averted productivity losses from adequate food nutrition." But these benefits would have arisen anyway without Milarex. Most salmon farmed in Norway is exported unprocessed, or semi-processed, and sold fresh or frozen in the supermarkets. The full health effect would arise even if it were not exported to Poland and marinated or smoked. In fact, doing so may have a negative effect by converting the salmon to a higher priced “luxury” product, hindering consumers from switching from meat to fish. Now, Summa Equity (the PE investor) does a lot of good, and Milarex does a lot to limit its negative impact on the environment. But this calculation is highly questionable and goes against common sense. More generally, it is an example of how "impact" claims often vastly overstate additionality as the effects would have manifested anyway - and the importance of not taking numbers at face value but checking what they actually measure. https://lnkd.in/ebzPCvqa
