Electronic Arts is bringing back its beloved College Football video game for the first time in over a decade. And they’re offering college players $600 and a copy of the game if they will allow their likeness to be included. This is a big deal. But will this payment structure work? Part of the reason EA’s college football game went away despite selling millions of copies annually is because the court ruled that the company was profiting off college athletes’ likenesses without compensating them. Now the game is back with new features and an entirely new business model. But will star players take a small payout to allow their likeness to be included in the game now that they are getting large endorsement deals in other categories? These players know their worth now. And if EA can't secure the college's top players, will the game find the same success it once had?  Time will tell. Will you be picking up College Football 25? Tore Olsson put his students in touch with American history through his popular and award-winning class “Red Dead America: Exploring America’s Violent Past Through the Hit Video Games.” Now this engagement has reached beyond the classroom—the historical profession’s most prestigious journal, the American Historical Review, just published a major feature on the class as an example of creative and innovative history teaching. Olsson is an associate professor and director of graduate studies in UT’s Department of History. His focus as a historian is the United States since the Civil War, with a particular interest in the US South, rural history, and transnational history. His December 2023 AHR article, “Teaching History with Video Games,” explores his inspiration to channel this focus into a college course. While playing the video game Red Dead Redemption II during the pandemic, he realized that he could apply interest in the wildly popular game toward teaching the real US history. “My epiphany, therefore, was simple,” wrote Olsson. “Why not try teaching an undergraduate class that uses the fictional content of the game as a gateway to exploring some of the thorniest dilemmas that wracked the United States between the 1870s and 1920s?” A February 2021 social media post announcing the new course went viral. Professional learning should not be delivered--it is not a Fed Ex package.

This new study from EdWeek Market Brief keeps repeating one of my biggest pet peeves in the #professionaldevelopment landscape. In a survey on "in person" and "virtual" #pd, they keep using the verb "delivered" to describe a professional development experience. You can't "deliver" development. It isn't a package. It's an ongoing, iterative process. Anybody who is "delivering" #professionallearning to #schools isn't worth the time or money.
