VP of Clinical Strategy & Innovation @ CareAbout | Delivering All-Around Excellence in VBC Performance
Always great to catch up with John Davidson, MBA, PA-C who I d considered the Godfather of APPs in NYU Langone Health. The #PAs and #NPs profession grew like a rocket ship under his leadership — with a robust leadership structure that transformed care delivery across the network. Despite leaving clinical medicine and NYU altogether since 2018, this organization still has a special place in my heart and I will always be thankful for the experiences. Hence I would still reach out from time to time to reconnect with el jefe. Who knows the healthcare is small community. 。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。 Time management is such an important skillset that requires dilligence and discipline - making the illusion as if you have control of time. People often ask me how I juggle my time. I would say weekends are for my wife and kids, week days are for work, weeknights are for networking and in between is for catching up and connecting virtually. I try really hard to continuously connect with my friends and engage my entire network to the best of my ability. Making new friends is easy, maintaining them can be challenging — so choose wisely.

Grateful to Prathibha Varkey, MBBS, MPH, MHPE, MBA, and president of Mayo Clinic Health System, for speaking at 1st Tuesday today! Some takeaways from her discussion include: • Never be afraid to educate yourself. Varkey has four degrees, and each serves a different purpose — her ’13 MBA from the Carlson School gave her a much-needed financial background. • Stretch goals (ambitious but still technically possible targets) can be strong motivation and self-confidence tools. Assuming victory early on can help free you and your team to tackle things otherwise seen as daunting. • Take risks, as a person and as an organization, to encourage growth. Anything less than 30% uncomfortability means you’re not challenging yourself enough.

I recently stepped off the governing Board of a 50+ year old private hospital after six years (2018-2023) chairing both the Clinical Governance Committee and in my last four years, the Board itself. Reflecting, i teased out six points for each year of service. 1. Leadership is in the moment. Challenges of the times always require that someone responds to the call to lead. Will you respond to the call to lead a compelling vision or will you rather sit it out? 2. Harness and maximize the full strengths and talents of the team. This will prevent the leader from the burden of feeling he/she alone must have all the solutions. Create a nurturing and productive environment and you will be amazed by what the team can accomplish. 3. We are simply performing roles and it is important to be appreciative of everyone’s gifts, talents and contributions to the team. We do this in the humility that our positions are an opportunity and a blessing to serve and not that the positions per se confer the greatest wisdom on us or that others in the team are unable to shine if given our roles. 4. Take responsibility for the good times as well as the challenging times. Avoid the fundamental attribution error where the good is attributable to your wisdom and efforts, but the bad is a reflection of the failings of the others including the external environment. Learn the applicable lessons, whether the outcomes are good or bad and keep things moving. 5. Opportunities always exist to continuously hone your skills and grow your knowledge. And you have a responsibility to plan your professional and personal development. You are not too old, experienced or knowledgeable to grow. 6. It is important to master the art of balancing short-term needs with longer term strategic goals. The real needs and lawful demands of team members should not simply all be sacrificed on the altar of a promise of a better future. If need be, and the present must be sacrificed for the future, then carve a stake in that future for those sacrificing today. sodzitettey@gmail.com

Patient Safety Specialist ◊ Healthcare Transition Management ◊ Leadership & Performance Improvement Coach ◊ Nursing Faculty ◊ Implementation Scientist ◊ Community Engagement ◊ Guest Lecturer/Speaker ◊ Community Nursing
This is such a relevant topic-- as nursing leaders we need to get in front of these behaviors and directly hold our healthcare executives accountable for addressing toxic incivility in all leadership roles within the organization. Rarely do I see this addressed or leadership being held accountable for their behaviors and actions. It is often overlooked, ignored or accepted.
“When there's a toxic manager in a clinical setting, people die faster." No matter the industry, a bad boss is bad news. However, in healthcare, toxic leadership can have consequences that are far more dire than just low employee morale. We recently sat down with expert Dr. Dan Weberg, PhD, MHI, RN, FAAN to get his thoughts on toxic leadership in nursing and how educators can help to stop it.
