"Hollander helped form and is working as part of Edison Community Partners LLC to build Kal Recovery, a supportive recovery housing development that involves the construction of 48 apartments. The project, which has been redesigned three times since it was conceived in 2018, will use several acres of a former Brownfield Redevelopment site adjacent to 333 E. Alcott St. in the Edison Neighborhood. The project will include three buildings on a little less than 7 acres of a 12-acre site between Alcott and Reed streets. Last week, Dylan Ogilvie, Melchor’s General Manager of Operations, attended the MATES in Construction WA Industry Partners Sundowner. The event not only provided a chance to connect with like-minded people dedicated to creating a safer and healthier construction environment but also marked the launch of MATES' Research Study in collaboration with UWA. This study, conducted in partnership with The University of Western Australia, aims to understand the prevalence and potential causes of suicidal thoughts and behaviours, and mental health difficulties in the construction industry. Led by UWA academics, this important research piece aims to inform and shape the industry’s approach to improving psychosocial wellbeing. It is frequent to hear that people have been taught that Post-Traumatic Stress Disorders (PTSD) symptoms may diminish naturally with time or that it is better not to admit having this condition, hence not to seek its treatment, when a society considers mental conditions as taboo. However, people suffering from PTSD are hypervigilant people who tend to become overwhelmed by urban and architectural settings and elements of their city and of their houses. Designing for a wounded society requires meticulous efforts to decrease the gap between the inhabitants and their city and houses resulting from destroyed buildings and the people's distancing from their cities - for example during the period of time when they were hiding in shelters or when they had to abandon their city and come back after the disaster. The purpose of post-traumatic design is to restore, through research findings and architectural design, the healthy communication between the inhabitants, who extend themselves - their identity - to the visible image of the city and their city that must align with its inhabitants' image of the city they want to belong to.
