I err on the side of optimism, but the reality is stark. This article is great at describing the present affordable housing environment, the challenges faced by Beacon and many of our peer organizations, and smart solutions that are vital to keeping all of our neighbors housed, regardless of income.
Want to better understand this moment in Minnesota’s affordable housing landscape? Give this article a quick read! Thanks to Finance & Commerce and to Beacon’s Benjamin Helvick Anderson, Kevin Walker, and Chris LaTondresse for sharing your perspectives on why this information matters to Beacon and our larger community.

Accessible and attainable housing! Housing advocates we must change the message and communicate this better! Sessoms told the group that one of the first issues that needs to be addressed is the tone and tenor of the conversation around affordable housing. Several other members of the discussion agreed with Sessoms' assessment. Currently, he said, many people hear the term affordable housing and think of low-income or Section 8 housing. Instead, Sessoms said he prefers the term “accessible housing” – especially when it comes to the so-called “missing middle” housing, which refers to a range of housing types that fit between single-family detached homes and mid-to-high-rise apartment buildings. #attainablehousing #accessiblehousing

*MUST READ* Minnesota Realtors® CEO Josh McFall, CAE, RCE has co-authored an opinion piece with Housing First Minnesota CEO James Vagle calling for the Legislature to increase housing affordability, access, and supply. McFall and Vagle implore our legislators to act now as support for housing policy reform gains momentum and crosses party lines. They write, “We need to act on a bold vision that can simultaneously increase housing affordability, access and supply. As seen in Minneapolis, St. Paul, Bloomington, Richfield, and red and blue states across the country, that roadmap exists: legalize more housing options and enable more inventory, including more modestly dense housing in residential areas. We need to bring back the starter home that built communities across Minnesota.” Read the full article via MinnPost: https://lnkd.in/geUJngzB
