Stories, in the form of theatre, offer much fodder for #public #health. Bertold Brecht's play, Saint Joan of the Stockyards (https://lnkd.in/gDhmxkYU), for example, shines a glaring light on the dynamics between the haves, the have-nots and those who (profess to) help the have-nots. It struck me that much of the work we do in public health, particularly in global settings, is in the role of the intermediary between elites and those whose health suffers, largely because of their living and working conditions. The main character, Joan Dark (yes, inspired by Joan of Arc), sincerely wants to change oppressive working conditions, and tries to change the behaviour of those who hold power. She even gets involved in trying to organize a general strike, but then gets really cold staying up all night, gets hungry from not having hardly anything to eat, and makes decisions that are contrary to her convictions. She isn't one of the working class folks whom she sets out to assist, and reflects on how she isn't as tough as they are. In the end, she doesn't exactly betray them but she doesn't follow through on a promise to deliver a letter to some workers. It reminded me of the dozens of times that i have seen "do gooders" in public health sincerely try to change the conditions of ill health, unwittingly going up against large corporations with deep pockets and plenty of power. In some situations, we have been able to change legislation, policy or other sweeping change that bent the arc of justice towards better health. Other times, the forces of money and power defeat efforts to improve health for all. But the optimism and hunger for healthier people in a healthier world has to persist despite the losses. Keeping this positive, hopeful spirit alive is vital for those of us who do this work. The play gave me lots to think about, as i reflect on recent work stints in various nations including Canada.

Why do we express emotions? Are we really living in a culture of shame? How can we grow, both individually and as a community? These questions were at the heart of the panel discussion, “Pickle Cucumbers, Not Emotions – How to Talk to Grow Together” 🥒, held as part of the “Do We Really Care?” conference at this year’s Electrum Up To Date Festival. The session, led by the festival’s creative director, Cezary Chwicewski, attracted a large audience and we're excited to now share the recording online. In a time when empathy, understanding and communication skills are increasingly valued, exploring the culture around emotions and shame feels more relevant than ever. This panel offers insights that go beyond personal growth, encouraging reflection on how we can build cohesive teams and more open relationships. The panel featured: 🥒 Grażyna Biedroń – an artist and mental health advocate whose approach to life and work is grounded in authenticity and openness. 🥒 Kamila Papaj – a specialist in empathetic communication and a trainer helping foster healthy relationships and community in educational settings. 🥒 Andrzej Bajguz – a journalist with Polish Radio Białystok, blending art, culture and social responsibility through his work. This engaging discussion, filled with personal stories and practical takeaways, is a great opportunity for anyone aiming to enhance communication and connection in daily life. The Internet has taught everyone to be impatient. Everyone is in a hurry to move on to the next bite of content. Online magazines like Hidden Compass, publishing long-form content with zero intrusion from ads and click-bait, lead the fight-back. Hidden Compass has published my story, The Time of His Life, in its current issue. It's a very personal story, but one that seems relevant as events take place to mark the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings in Normandy in the Second World War. It's longer than my usual written-to-brief 1,000-word articles, but it shouldn't take longer than five or six minutes to read. When my parents took me and my brother and sister to the Normandy beaches in 1970 during a family holiday, those events in 1944 must have seemed very recent to them. The visits to the enormous war grave cemeteries must have been especially poignant, to our Dad who ‘saw action’ (strange expression) in Italy and North Africa, and to our Mum for reasons described in my story on Hidden Compass. They left a lasting impression on me, as a young teenager. Without wanting to gatecrash the D-Day events, it seems like as good a time as any, and better than most, to invite you to read my story - and if you do read it you'll find out why the timing is appropriate! Hidden Compass hosts a wealth of great long-read stories, all free to access. You’re asked to make a contribution, completely voluntary, which helps the site to publish without distracting click-bait ads and which partly supplements my base fee. Founder/Investor/Advisor/Connector with a track record for facilitating the most valuable domain name assets transactions & strategic M&A; 3x exit Founder, CreditCards.com & InsuranceQuotes.com
Random Sunday Thoughts #95 1. I saw an interesting X post yesterday from my friend Andrew Rosener where he regretted selling the category defining names Mushrooms*com & Shrooms*com. I agree. This is a category that is on the brink of explosive growth, as Psilocybin mushrooms continue their advancement in medical science. This got me thinking both about what domains I have sold that I wish I hadn't and what domain I would take for free if I could be granted only 1. The domain I would have never let go of is Sex*com (was a member in the LLC and spearheaded the first acquisition of it). Back in that timeframe, 2005, the domain was directly associated with the adult business and the vision for it was relatively narrow in that regard, and for us, as a business we did not want to be in, it made sense to sell the asset. However, today, the word and the name is so much broader with so many applications across many categories, and also a powerful potential brand domain. The domain I would be granted by a magic genie is easy and my answer has not changed since my first domain investment in 1998; Weather*com. It is a global word, and it is spoken of, read about, top of mind, an influence on every single person regardless of where they live, what they do, every single day of the year. No brainer. What about some of you? 2. I have to use this post to give a shout out to the best, Ron Jackson. Ron has been covering the domain asset class since I began in it and his loyalty, thoroughness, passion, and do-good for the industry is unparalleled. Last week in this post, I reflected on the excellent ICA meeting in Vegas. This week, Ron published his recap of the meeting, and it was just so well done, filled with a play by play and photos, and I just want to publicly express my appreciation. Here it is for those that missed it https://lnkd.in/e9v6sHjz 3. I am negotiating what may end up as one of our most important domain transactions of all time. There are so many takeaways from the process that I am excited to share down the road when all is said and done. 4. Hiccup! I had a minor medical incident this week so Random Thoughts Episode 5 was pushed up 2 weeks and will livestream this Thursday Feb 8th at 12pm EST on our Hilco Digital Assets YouTube channel. Once again, larry fischer and I will be joined by a special guest with a powerful story to tell. I will post the links to call in and ask any questions, and a reminder on Wed. All prior episodes are on https://lnkd.in/en92WFSG, Apple & Spotify. 5. We're closing in on the end of the NFL season. It has not been the best of Draftkings seasons for yours truly. Couple more shots to get it right, then onto PGA Draftkings which is the best. I am rooting for a Lions-Ravens Super Bowl, and the Lions to win it all, which would be a feel good story, awesome for Detroit but I expect it will be the Niners-Ravens. Until Next Week #domainnames #domains #digitalassets #brands #digitalmarketing

Global Speaker, Tech Columnist, and Startup Marketing Advisor | Transforming Startups into Businesses
They say that life begins at the end of your comfort zone, so here goes… 😬 Deep breath, Hillel. Not gonna lie, I’m super excited. And also terrified. But also excited. It’s finally here! I’m launching my own community - ‘The Inner Hilz’. A ton of you have asked me how I do what I do since 10/7. And the truth is, it hasn’t been easy. When I shut down my business to fight for Israel full time, most would say I was taking a huge risk. They’d be right. But I knew it was the right move. I actually had 100% clarity that it was the right move. I also knew that Hashem has got my back. And He has indeed had my back. So I dove in head first. The results have been, honestly, mind boggling for me. Billions of views from across the globe and thousands of messages from people telling me that I actually made them reconsider their anti Israel stance. I see the impact and I’m not stopping. This is good for my soul. It’s good for Israel. My bank account? Not so much… I know a lot of you have asked how you can support me, and I didn’t have an answer. Now I do. So here’s how: Sign up as a Founding Member: It is only $18/month or $180 for the full year. (Yes, there is a pattern here of 18. which equals ‘Chai’. As in Am Yisrael Chai!) This gets you access to all my best content curated and organized in a way that’s 100x better than social media. You’ll immediately get access to the following categories: - Hillel’s Unpopular Opinions - Hillel’s Friends - Hillel’s Favorite Things - Debunking Myths About the War And I’ll be adding new content every week. Plus I’m going to host an exclusive Ask Me Anything Zoom call just for community members. Click here to sign up and support: https://lnkd.in/eaiCNubA Use “HILZ18” to get 18% off for life. This is something I've wanted to do for a long time, because let's be honest, social media kind of bites. They never show you the content from the people you follow and they make it impossible to find older content that you want to revisit or share. So I decided to change that. I will of course still be posting on FB, LinkedIn, Insta, and X with just as much frequency, but I teamed up with a partner to curate all of my best content here in a way that's easy to find and organized for you guys. So sign up here but do me a favor please. Text me privately to tell me you signed up. I’d like to thank you personally. https://lnkd.in/eaiCNubA

Host of City Manager Unfiltered podcast | Founder of the American Association of Municipal Executives | Have largest and most engaged audience of city/county managers | Proud father of a United States Marine & Sailor
Today, the American Association of Municipal Executives reached 300 founding members and is already cruising towards 400. On Monday, we had hit 200 members. Founders are excited and can't wait to get started building this organization. AAME members want to be connected. They want to contribute to something that is greater than themselves. And they recognize that not only are we in a time that requires a new approach, but that AAME is the vehicle in which they can be the change they want to see. The public sector paradigm shift I have been talking about is real. It is here. And more than 300 people are going to "shape the shift." We could get a wave of last minute registrations tomorrow because the FOMO is real, ladies and gentlemen. Are you going to be one of them? Today, you can sign up and become a founder. Tomorrow, you can help us start building. In the future, you will be able to say that you were a part of it. Because rest assured -- the AAME is going to completely re-imagine how a professional organization for city and county managers should educate and advocate on their behalf.
